Turtle Posted February 3, 2007 Report Posted February 3, 2007 Heeeeeeyyyy!!! THREAD REVIVAL!!! I've completely forgotten about this one! Thanks, Gribbon! I'm still quite interested in the origins of clothing, and I would love it if your revival here gets us some more answers to the issue! OK, here's a take on clothing. Making clothing is on the order of a high skill, as well as highly time-consuming. The more, or better-made, or more elaborate the clothing is, then others take it as an indicator of the wearer's skill and patience (assuming they made the clothing). So, they who dress well improve their value as a potential mate. :hihi: Of course there is something to say for acquiring 'good' clothing one has not themself made. Whether acquired as a gift, or a purchase, or some other means, the clothing still carries the message ' I'm too sexy for my loincloth...too sexy...' Quote
Jay-qu Posted February 3, 2007 Report Posted February 3, 2007 Two other takes following turtle line of logic - early clothes would have be made from the skin of animals, so the wearer is showing off thier catch! the bigger the bear skin they are wearing the stronger and braver the man. Quote
gribbon Posted February 11, 2007 Report Posted February 11, 2007 Thanks, Gribbon! Yeah I was going to say that Jay's theory seesm most plausible...you need clothing to protect yourself more than anything, which is probably why primates never developed clothes...The main evidence there is for this is how clothes have, for many centuries have been the same....(for example headscarves have been used in Arabia for centuries, mainly to protect the neck from the sun)... :) Quote
