Racoon Posted April 15, 2006 Report Posted April 15, 2006 This is inspired from Turtle's earlier Thread "Waste Management"found here: http://hypography.com/forums/earth-science/6163-home-wasterecycling.html Do you do your part to recycle?and to what degree and extent? It seems only natural that recycling must be implemented to reduce waste and conserve resources. And $ave Energy as well.. So, respond as to what you do, what more you could do, or Ideas for more/more efficient recycling possibilities! Quote

DFINITLYDISTRUBD Posted April 16, 2006 Report Posted April 16, 2006 I recycle...but not in the usuall sence. First off things that I can use or think might be remotely useful eventually (and that sweetie dsesn't force me to throw out!!!) never make it to the trash (car, motor bike, bicycle and mower parts, electronics, hoses and tubing, metal scraps etc. stay.) Dead vehicles stripped of all their goodies (any thing I think is or could be even remotely usefull) get hualed off to be recycled. Cans, bottles go to a buddy of mine that turns them in to be recycled for cash. Useable clothes, books movies and music go to the local thrift store. Cedars 1 Quote

Cedars Posted April 16, 2006 Report Posted April 16, 2006 Driving home yesterday I passed by one of the recycle places.Aluminum cans are up to .70 a pound!! I dont remember seeing cans that high ever, especially now. Usually aluminum is going down at this time of year. What is needed is incentive. Whether or not a person should do this on their own isnt the real issue. Its how to get people to take the time to recycle. Money should be offered for these recycle items. Another problem is advertising. There are many people out there who can dispose of recycleable items but the general population does not have contact with them. Advertising in newspapers is expensive, plus people often want you to come get their stuff, rather than taking the time themselves to bring it to the appropriate places. When iron is $90 a ton it takes alot of pipes, hinges, doorknobs etc to make the drive worth while. And as a point of reference, $90 a ton is very high and has only been going on for about the last 8 years. For many years a car body was worth $17 - $30 a ton. Most cars now a days weigh less than two tons. Now if you can fill up a van with a bunch of steel you can get one to weigh 5 tons. Plus there are many environmental requirements before a junk man can recycle a car, such as draining oils and fluids. Pulling tires (which cost to dispose of), batteries, etc. Tarantism 1 Quote

Due to my ex being a pack rat, my own personal best was a 74 dodge van which topped out a 9 tons after I got done packing it, after we parted ways. That s.o.b. had TRAIN PARTS!! Do you have any idea how heavy train parts are!! I couldnt believe the garbage he kept. anyways... The man who came to get it stressed his own flat bed loading it. When he unloaded it at the junkyard with his loader, the van bent around his forks and I was forbidden to pack vans that tight again. Quote
sergey500 Posted April 17, 2006 Report Posted April 17, 2006 Nope. I do not. I throw things in the proper the garbage, metal in metal, and everything into whatever else there. But if i help others and help recycling? Nope. Too lazy. Here, in America, people waste so much, it won't matter how much i would help. Hell, we have so much garabage you can see it from space. (Why don't we send it to space? INto the sun...) Cedars 1 Quote

Dude At least you're honest! No is an option. Many people do not recycle, and Obviously you are one.But that is because you are lazy and don't give a sh*t, not because you can't, or don't have facilities Yeah, sending it into space would be a LOT cheaper than simply taking a few minutes to sort. :naughty: I'm sure Mother Nature is very proud of you. :eek2: Quote
Tormod Posted April 18, 2006 Report Posted April 18, 2006 We try. Bottles, glass, paper etc. But I admit to a certain lacklustre attitude towards recycling anything else - I live not too far from an energy plant where they simply dump everything into a big furnace and burn it all anyway. Cedars 1 Quote

DFINITLYDISTRUBD Posted April 20, 2006 Report Posted April 20, 2006 That s.o.b. had TRAIN PARTS!! Do you have any idea how heavy train parts are!!Actually I do!! I have often volunteered my time at the local rail museum. But it should be noted that I actually use everything eventually. Usually for experiments... I'm very fond of tinkering with machines and electronics. ( besides it gives me something to do with my free time instead of hitting the bars! She seems to like having me around...or at least knowing that I am not doing things that I shouldn't.) Also the list of things that I've fixed with parts I've saved is long and getting longer everyday!! Quote

A neighbor has a steam engine train on a short track on his property. He said he knew of no one who could use this stuff because there was too little of the whole. It was like a couple of pistons (one was cracked) and some other odds and ends. Quote
