I dont understand in what sense you mean I am in someone else. It sounds like mysticism to me. When I look at another, I dont see something like me.

 

In fact, in my experince I am not in others, since they invariably attribute motives to me that are not applicable. This allows me to control them with them being able to subvert my autonomy. Thus I reject the idea that they have insight into me.

 

As to them in me, I dont understand this either. I predict how others will behave based on my experience, there is no 'innate' insight present. So I must also reject that position. Unless I have misunderstood your question?

I'm coming at this from the perspective of concept formation, i.e. the process whereby we abstract out similarities and refer to the similarities with the single term, such as 'human'.

If you see yourself as a different species, well, then I have no problem with what you say. But you aren't a different species Pan. You exist in others in the sense that what makes you human is also in them. There is nothing mystical about that. If you destroy the 'human-ness' in others, you attack the 'human-ness' in you. It's as simple as that. The only way out of that conundrum is to blind yourself to what you are doing. And blindness is blindness. Make yourself blind to one thing and all similar things become invisible to you.

 

The same thing extends to other living things. They are like you too, in that they 'live'. So if you seek to destroy that life in them (as an end), then you attack the life in you too. You can't escape that. Yes, we do need to take the life of other living things in order to survive so it's incumbent upon us to cause ourselves the least amount of pain while doing so, but not by blinding ourselves to it.
