Okay, voted no.

Because I the only options I can think of for "world peace" are where the cure is worse than the disease.

1) Overmind or Borg or Something (Childhood's End)

2) Military Enforcement of Peace

3) Total Homogeneity of Culture and Opinions

4) Everyone's Dead.

5) Everyone's Stoned.

Even in "Star Trek" which has utterly eliminated crimes of property - there is unlimited free energy and no scarcity - there is still conflict over ideology, or actions, or personality. - even with "The Federation"

I'm afraid that fighting with each other is sort of the natural state of Human Beings, and without it, we'd lose something essential. Conflict breeds creativity.

On other hand, I think we can and should eliminate large scale proxy violence. Say - the US toppling the government of countries full of brown people at the behest of oil companies. (And no, I'm not talking about Iraq.)

Not to speak about invention, and scientific progress!

State-of-the-art airplanes in 1939 were no match for 1944 airplanes! They had five years of design and development in which they not only drew up plans and built prototypes, but actually churned out warplanes by the hundreds that was miles ahead of anything flying five years before! And this happened in all facets of technological life back then!

In 1944, Hitler had the V2, which (through Werner Von Braun) was the big daddy of the Apollo project. Now ask yourself, if not for war in the 20th century, how backwards would we have been?

(I smell a new thread...)

For some reason, when I think about world peace, i mostly think about poverty in third world countries, all of the rape and violence happening in countries like Sudan, and injustices that we all turn a blind eye to. I don't think that there will ever be a time when countries won't fight with each other over this and that, or when the world will be totally peaceful, but even just putting an end to the many big problems in the world today would make me feel more peaceful.

I think that if all the resources that are currently being devoted to war, or violence in some fashion, were instead devoted to something more worthwhile, the world would be a better place.

I answered this question yes ofcourse but I think a more relevant question is:

Is mankind willing to pay the price, everything comes with a cost and pease is no exception.

First cost: Can mankind give up his territorialism?

Second cost: Can he really learn to share the wealth?

Third cost: After the wealth has been shared, will the lazy then live off of the industrious creating an incentive for the industrious to also become lazy?

Fourth cost: Can all of mankind give up his weapons at the risk that some clandestine state doesn't.

Big question; Is war and man's competitive nature an attribute of the evolutionary process? What happens to us if we conquer this seemingly natural drive for dominance?................................Infy

Thanks Infy, but I think much of that was covered in the other poll to which I linked in post #1. This question, pure and simple, without reasons and barriers and whatevers...

Do I want world peace? Yes/No?

The first step before anything else becomes relevant is for people to realize they want it. Once they realize they want, they'll begin taking steps to achieve it.

Cheers.

Excellent. Now get the heck up off the floor and sit beside me so we can enjoy the view together and share our thoughts, contemplations, and pontifications.

So, do you seriously place a higher value on scientific progress, innovation, and business than you do a peaceful society? Curious.

Would you sacrifice scientific progress, innovation, and business/jobs for peace??
