Racoon Posted May 3, 2006 Report Posted May 3, 2006 Plato. Nietzsche. Bodhidharma. Descartes. Jefferson. St. Augustine. Campbell. Derrida. Sartre. Rand. Jung. Wittgenstein. St. Aquinas. Kierkegaard.... and many others! :hihi: A place to talk about great philosophers both old and new.Philosophy comes from the Greek meaning "Love of Wisdom" I'll start off with the Frenchie Rene Descartes! I happen to like his revolutionary ideas. :phones: :cup: He shared several similar ideas with Galileo, and decided not to publish his work "The World" when Galileo was getting strung-up by the Church... "I think therefore I am" is probably the most recognized of his thoughts.:hihi: Awareness of the contents of the mind precedes any awareness of external reality. An inventory of the mind's contents reveals 3 distinct types of ideas:Fictitious ideas > which the mind inventsAdventitious ideas > which the mind receives from the external worldInate ideas > which are born with the mind. Theres some pretty heavy stuff...and some more to come, :hihi: :note2: Is there a philosopher with whom you agree, or has made an influence in your life? a Philosopher with which has opened your mind? Buffy Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 What I mean is, What the f**k are we doing here? And *that* folks, is Philosophy! Racc: Its circumlocutions can induce ennui. Maybe you can provoke discourse in this genre by propounding controversial schemata. Hmmm? Up for it? I'm not, its late... Zzzzzzz..... Let's go. Yes, let's go. :hihi:Buffy Quote
Panjandrum Posted May 4, 2006 Report Posted May 4, 2006 Racoon, Im surprised your favourite philosopher isnt Hegel. You seem to share alot of his ideas, really. Perhaps you picked them up from a non-academic source that didnt credit him? He was very into decribing the world in terms of pairs of opposites. His belief was that these seeming contradictions can be harmonised into an 'absolute knowledge'. He also loved the French Revolutionary ideals B) I dont care for Descartes. His scientific ideas were pathetic, fatlly biased by his catholic faith. Quote
jkellmd Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Great thread Racoon! It's either the enlightenment or the romantics for me. Jung is the exception. Quote
Panjandrum Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Well, panjandum, It so happens he lived at the time when the Catholic Church had so much power that if you wanted to continue to live and philosophize, you patronized it. :hihi: Fair point :) Which is why he didn't publish some of his work. Hmm, I didnt know about that. What kind of stuff? Anti-catholic? Pro-Protestant? Anti-religious? Atheist? Quote
Panjandrum Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Hmmmmmm...let me see,That sounds like a lot of Yin/Yang Buddhism talk. I'm surprised you didn't think of that. :) Why do you think I suggested him? :hihi: Quote
Agememnon Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Has anyone looked into Nietzche? If so what are your ideas on his ideas? This is my first post on this forum by the way.You can tell by the absence of an avatar.Or signiture. Quote
hallenrm Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 My favorite philosopher is Bertrand Russell and Karl Popper, though I must admit I have not spent very much time studying philosophy. I got interested in philosophy after I submitted my thesis for a doctorate degree and was waiting for the referee's report. What appealed to me about Russell the most, was his proficiency of thought, he seemed to me to be able to defend the most indefensible issues. From his writings I learned the art of defense and offense in any argument. Karl Popper and Paul Feyeraband appealed to my iconoclastic character. I need some time to recollect my thoughts and reflections about how they appealed to me :) Quote

This is my first post on this forum by the way.You can tell by the absence of an avatar.Or signiture.Hello Agememnon, Welcome aboard. Neitzche is an interesting fellow... err, was... What are your thoughts? Have you read much of his work? Anyway, if you click on the link (near the top left) which says "User CP," you can add a signature and choose an avatar. Good luck, and enjoy! ;) Cheers. :) Quote
Panjandrum Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 I don't know. You suggested that I read stuff based on his ideas without realizing it. Never read the dude. sounds like he got his ideas from Eastern Thought Quite possible. He expresses them well, tho, and more or less 'scientifically'. I suppose I prefer to get my information pre-filtered for my culture, so I can spend more time understanding the idea and less time puzzling over societal diffrences. Please answer me this Panjandum: Is there really a difference between being angryand pretending not to be? Can you trust anybody? Fascinating question. Have you been sniffing 'shrooms :cup: The answers are 'no' and 'no', respectively. :) Quote
Panjandrum Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Has anyone looked into Nietzche? If so what are your ideas on his ideas? Ive read Nietzche. I like Nietzche. His ideas are full of mystical mumbo-jumbo and such crap, but at the core tis quite aesthetic. Ive always seen the Nietzchean Superman to be the exact opposite of the sociopath. The Antipath. :cup: Quote
InfiniteNow Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Ive always seen the Nietzchean Superman to be the exact opposite of the sociopath. The Antipath. :)Isn't the opposite of "sociopath" called a "sociolost?" :cup: Quote
Panjandrum Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Hahahaha. An Sociophile, perhaps? :cup: Quote
Panjandrum Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Yeah, I read Derrida, and that other prick Boudrillard or whatever. I was trying to understand 'postmodernism', til I figured out it was complete BS. Sniffing 'shrooms is a local expression, I think. Idnt have thought its meaning to be so opaque, tho. Quote
Panjandrum Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Youre so harsh a critic, young jedi. It cant be good for your Karma  Quote
