to me, the only worthwhile philosophy is the one you live by. its pointless to sit in your fine home pondering marxist economics, or on the factory floor reading 'leviathan', thats just an intellectual game. to discover which philosophers _have_ influenced you the most, you have to examine your life carefully.

for my part, it seems to be the philosophies of hedonism and nihilism :cup:

This seems like a Nietzsche think to say.

What is with the "fine house" and "factory floor"? Is this an allusion of some sort?

What you are suggesting is that we pay no attention to any philosophy except our "own", and that all others are "pointless". In this I disagree. How would you know what Philosophies you are "influenced" by if you have no knowledge of them? You must examine philosophies carefully to discover your life.

Your post sounds more like a plug for Hedonism and Nihilism then an argument or explanation of how appropriate these philosophies are in Human life.

idnt mean 'your personal philosophy' to refer to lancaster, i meant it in the sense of 'ones personal philosophy.'

the fine house and factory floor are just shortcuts for 'anyone', no particular allusion was intended. as for being a plea for nihilism and hedonism, well its true i write from that perspective, but thats because that the kind of person i turned out to be.

i have read a considerable ammount of philosophy, the arcane area of ethical egoism and rational nihilism arent the first books i found! and while it is largely useless, i certainly wouldnt suggest anyone not read philosophy, it can be bewitchingly beautiful. all i intended to convey was, that knowledge of yourself is extremely important before you start dabbling in philosophy. its very easy to loose youreself admidst the shining ideas.

Ah, I see. Thank you for the clarification. Know I understand. The "swine"

was a joke. No offense intended. But I hope that no one here is uptight enough to take it as an insult.

I don't agree about the self knowledge part of your post, though. I think that one, such as myself can read philosophy and learn more about them selves in the process. It is a sort of distinctive thing, philosophy. I think that most people know what they agree with and just don't know how to write it out. That is what philosophers do and you can either agree or not with their ideas. You need to read a large variety of philosophers to get a feel for the ideas that are out there, not just some egotism and nihilism ideas.

Can you throw out some names so I can read up on your ideas? You really seem to like the nihilism thing so I want to try it out!

i wouldnt say nihilism is something i enjoy, its just my natural state. i dont see any purpose or reason behind reality, no good reason even in theory to keep living beyond the fact that you may as well do so.

hmm, i agree. i suppose i was talking about those impressionable sorts in search of an ideal. i forgot i was talking to normal people, i suppose you _would_ have to be pretty pathological to become uber obsessed with an ideology :)

I am uptight enough. And just in case other members here lack insight into your alleged (and tasteless) jokes, I suggest you adopt a more polite tone.
