motionmountain Posted September 30, 2005 Report Posted September 30, 2005 I wrote this up for all those who are interested in physics. It is just for fun, andthere is no commercial interest in it. The latest edition of the free Motion Mountain physics textcan be downloaded at http://www.motionmountain.net In total, over 1200 pages lead through the whole of physics, from classical mechanics to relativity, electrodynamics, thermodynamics, quantum theory, nuclear physics andunification. The eighteenth edition adds more about the echolocationcapabilities of bats and humans, describes the puzzle ofEinstein's last birthday present, gives more details onrainbows, introduces the pearl necklace length contractionparadox and presents the Einstein-de Haas effect and theBarnett effect. The text now provides the classification ofrocks, shows how to use the high voltage from a computermonitor to make things levitate, introduces magnetoreceptionand the sensing of electrical fields, explains the Richterscale for earthquakes, gives an introduction into thebehaviour of solids, liquids and gases at lowes temperaturesand presents the potentially toughest challenge of physics.Numerous figures, photographs and puzzles have been added. The section on special relativity and several other chaptershave been improved thoroughly. Over 60 pages of newmaterial have been added, often triggered by remarks andsuggestions of readers. A warm thank you to all of them.If you find a boring page, do complain - I'll change it. Enjoy. motionmountain Posted May 5, 2006 Author Report Posted May 5, 2006 The new, nineteenth edition of the free Motion Mountain physics text can nowbe downloaded at http://www.motionmountain.net (put back in again by decision of moderator) Over 1000 pages lead through the whole of physics, from mechanics torelativity, electrodynamics, thermodynamics, quantum theory, nuclear physicsand unification. The nineteenth edition gives details on radiometric dating techniques, explains how to destroy airplanes with thermometers, shows how to use the sameidea to measure the speed of bullets and that of light, presents a classicalsystem that obeys the Schroedinger equation, introduces Tesla coils, showsthat space-time has different properties in certain patent offices, tells howto see effects from atoms using only a lamp and a piece of metal, gives moredetails on clouds and jets of astronomic size, shows how to perform aprecision Michelson-Morley experiment, gives the latest results on the Pioneeranomaly, introduces fusion reactors, demonstrates the chromatic lens errors ofthe eye, and presents the simplest unsolved problem about the trefoil knot. The text also provides improved writing, more figures, more curiosities, manyadditional solutions to the challenges, and, thanks to the help of MartinElsaesser, the first embedded animation. Many thanks also to all thosereaders who have suggested improvements and material for the text. An erratapage that allows direct feedback via the website is now available. Enjoy. Boerseun Posted May 5, 2006 Report Posted May 5, 2006 Reminds me of the popular show on Discovery, Mythbusters.Well, not Mythbusters, actually. More like the sequel - SPAMBUSTERS!!! Quote
Jay-qu Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 got it covered  though it is non-profit and science based.. he could have at least introduced himself first Quote
motionmountain Posted May 6, 2006 Author Report Posted May 6, 2006 A pity that this time the link was taken out. In the past, the forum had a differentpolicy. (Just search for motionmountain and look upwhen I joined the forum.)I post a message about my motion mountain physics text every 6 months or so; it is a pity that some peoplecannot imagine that this is not spam. Besides, there is more information about me on the motionmountain website. Christoph Schiller Quote
Tormod Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 Frankly you could have posted this in your old thread. Quote

arkain101 Posted May 6, 2006 Report Posted May 6, 2006 I find it amusing how many people take the time to post negetive little tid bits that taint the atmosphere of this forum instead of just ignoring these things. he could have at least introduced himself first, spammers have no imagination I suppose one could imagine that this person is taking the time to post on several forums about this helpful link he has shared and does not want to bother with introductions, or has no intent of being an active member. Jay-qu Posted May 7, 2006 Report Posted May 7, 2006 you have to understand that we get a lot of this - sometimes it can be hard to seperate the genuine from the rest. Quote
motionmountain Posted May 9, 2006 Author Report Posted May 9, 2006 I'll try to make it sound less like spam net time. Thank you all for your understanding. Christoph Schiller Quote
motionmountain Posted November 18, 2007 Author Report Posted November 18, 2007 Just to switch your spam filters off: this is free and non-commercial. The new, twenty-first edition of the freely downloadable physics textbook is available on www . motionmountain . net Almost 1500 pages lead through the whole of physics, from mechanics to relativity, electrodynamics, thermodynamics, quantum theory, nuclear physics, astrophysics and unification. Over hundred new figures and tables, and numerous explanations have been added, with many examples from animals, plants and machines. The twenty-first edition now explains why the speed of light is too slow to speculate with success on the stock exchange, adds the second-level bear fur colour puzzle and the young mother puzzle, presents the nearest place with a pressure permanently lower than that of the atmosphere, adds the puzzle about the horse and the snail on a rubber, tells more about metamaterials, adds some simple chemical puzzles, presents what incredible things on atomic layersone can discover using a pencil and sticky tape, tells more on biological rhythms and clocks, explains how to observe the rotation of the Earth in any classroom after two seconds of observation, shows an electric effect observed on many playgrounds, shows the beauty of bursting soap bubbles and bouncing tennis balls, explains how it is possible to observe the motion of single, isolated electrons, gives more details on the shape of the proton, and tells how to build the simplest possible radio control system. The first 360 pages are available also in French, due tothe great work of Benoit Clenet, and can be downloaded fromthe bienvenue page. A wiki open to everybody now keeps track of misprints and suggestions. Enjoy the reading! Christoph Schiller Quote
Mohit Pandey Posted November 21, 2007 Report Posted November 21, 2007 I have heard that senior students complain about the physics being dry.(I know it can't be wet. Only chemistry can be wet.:phones:)I found this phenomenon in other countries such as England and US also. I wonder how do they complain of such a exciting subject. I am looking forward to understand more deeply and clearly many concepts/theories in the coming years. There is a dire need of creating free ebooks such as The adventure of physics . It would go a long way in solving this problem. This subject as it is-connected to practical life in the form of electricity, T.V, mobile. Everything is almost conneted to Physics! Quote
Mohit Pandey Posted November 21, 2007 Report Posted November 21, 2007 Hello Christoph Schiller! If you have enough time interact on Hypo. There are many members like me who would get help. By the way, I am facing problem the single book. Do I need to download it one by one? IE says Done. But it doesn't ask where to save the file. Quote
motionmountain Posted November 21, 2007 Author Report Posted November 21, 2007 Just search for file names with motionmounatin in them. Regards Christoph Quote

motionmountain Posted November 22, 2007 Author Report Posted November 22, 2007 I switched the server to deliver zipped pdf files instead of pure pdf files, so that the problem should not appear any more. Enjoy! Christoph GAHD 1 Quote
