MagnetMan Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 Land space in Japan is at apremium. The future lies in vertical cities - not just for Japan but for all of us, Urban sprawl not only keeps eating up land, but creates traffic grid-lock and takes very little advanatage of gravity as a means of transportation and sewerage disposal. If a vertical city of roughly five miles in diameter and ten or fiteen thousand feet high, is constructed around a hollow center, chimney dynamics comes into play. Atmospheric thermal energy can be converted into a power system that can generate electricity for the city. A chimney flue works because the atmospheric pressure inside the chimney is less than the pressure outside of it. Inside a giant chimney the continuous updraft could dive wind turbines. Condensation on the inner walls would supply millions of gallons of purified water daily. The circular construction deflects wind forces. The interior of the envisioned ATEC city could have wooded parks, waterways and waterfalls, greenhouse gardens, industrial and civic centers, all accessible via counter-balanced elevators, with the wilderness just minutes from the front door. Every home could be a spacious penthouse, over-looking Nature, each with its own greenhouse front garden. Quote
Racoon Posted May 10, 2006 Report Posted May 10, 2006 Not to mention all the valuable land that gets used for roads too MM.All that land wasted , instead of use for Farming, Trees, or whatever else...Its quite substantial... Interesting theory. Sounds like the Jetsons cartoon a little bit.If we can't build out anymore, the only logical solution is up! Sounds Science Fiction for now.Sky scrapers help in the regard that you are expressing... You have some cool ideas in that head of yours Magnet Dude. :estrange: Neccessity is the Mother of all inventions. Quote
UncleAl Posted May 11, 2006 Report Posted May 11, 2006 If a vertical city of roughly five miles in diameter and ten or fiteen thousand feet highWhere will you get enough concrete and steel tp build it ? What is the compressive load/area below three miles of building? Crunch. Where does the sewage go? Waiting lines in front of elevators? Arson. Quote
Cedars Posted May 11, 2006 Report Posted May 11, 2006 Where will you get enough concrete and steel tp build it ? What is the compressive load/area below three miles of building? Crunch. Where does the sewage go? Waiting lines in front of elevators? Arson. And dont forget the roped off crash areas for those who cant takes no 'mo and chose to plunge to their deaths rather than live like lemmings packed in shiny metal boxes..... Look daddy, its raining people again! bad Cedars... bad bad Cedars  Quote
Jay-qu Posted May 11, 2006 Report Posted May 11, 2006 sounds great but I dont think on such large proportions, circular will only deflect wind so much, as it is skyscrapers are made to sway with the wind at the buildings fundamental frequency, a building so large couldnt do this.. Quote
MagnetMan Posted May 11, 2006 Author Report Posted May 11, 2006 Where will you get enough concrete and steel tp build it ? What is the compressive load/area below three miles of building? Crunch. Where does the sewage go? Waiting lines in front of elevators? Arson. Closed minds only see problems and fall over cliffs in dispair. Open minds see a lot better and keep their balance. The planet is made of rock and iron. The building technology is already here. Japan is already planning beyond three thousand feet,. Elevators are strung on the inside curve. A three or four minute wait beats two hours in traffic grid-lock. As to commiting suicide in human hives, we are already living there doing that in ever increasing numbers, whle living in cramped apartments and trailer homes. The infrasytructure we live in now is over-loaded. Electrical grids are failing, highways are unkempt, bridges are crumbling, sewerage lines are blocked and water is scarce, not to speak of dwindling energy reserves. The ATEC idea is to create ample interior space and live in luxury. Money laundering by petty landlords can no longer be the object. Human wellbeing must be central. (I already mentioned wooded parks and waterways with each family a fruit and vegetable garden) while making more efficient use of water and energy. All sewerage is recycled. The wilderness outside the city is left to recover and return to its pristine state. With all farming indoors, air-born infestation is ended and no more poisons are sprayed into the earth and the atmosphere. This may sound like pie sky, unless you have a better idea, we may as well have the one suggested with cream on top. More of the present will just keep poisoning us. Our pulmonary systems are failing and cancer is spreading. The biggest industry on the planet right now is medicine. Quote
