Turtle Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 Over in Portland today they have a 'shred day' going for people to drop off personal documents for shredding. I shred at home (used to tear up by hand!  ). Do you shred? When & where? Is ID theft a problem in your little corner of the world? Quote
Racoon Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 OOOOHH!good Poll Turtler... (don't put me out of a job  ) With all the F*ing Tweekers running around everywhere, shredding becomes important.Due to ID theft as you mentioned... YES.When my Grandpa died, we found he had about 5 paper shredders. Not that he really needed them, he was just going senile and buying crap he already had.. So Yes! I use one he bought and shredsome of it I put in the trash as opposed to recycling  but, why take chances... Good thing is,I am not important enough to be worth bothering about... Quote
Tormod Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 I recycle, but I don't shred. Most of our documents are electronic though and there's a system in place to safely back things up, but not to delete anything. We're pack rats...better have tons of gigabytes of documents than wipe anything out. Quote
TheBigDog Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 If someone steals my identity? I only wish I could see the look of dissapointment on their face when they tried to make it worth their while. Bill Quote
Jay-qu Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 I dont shred - I have nothing to hide and ID theft isnt really a problem round here. Quote
Racoon Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 - I have nothing to hide good for you Jay-Qu dude! :) Crank is a serious f*cking scourge around here!! Thankfully, you don't deal with it over there in Australia... But here it is Serious Reality! Especially Turtle's and Racoon's turf...A growing crime that is hard to prosecute, and affects your entire life if it happens! Not something thats fun!  Something that is helped prevented by shredding all credit card solicitations and important documentsMany lives have been ruined. Quote
UncleAl Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 I shred at homeCrosscut shredder, mix well a whole lot of shreds in a plastic bag, spray with a garden hose. Massage. The government optically unshreds documents - scan in both sides of all the chaff, discard blanks, let the computer sort by albedo, geometery, and text connectivity (possibly in parallel via optical Fourier transforms). If you crosscut you make the job much harder by at least [(N^2)-N]/2 where "N" is the number of pieces. If you crosscut shred and then wet pulp, they've got to want it real bad. Quote
Jay-qu Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 what have you got to hide al  If I really wanted something gone then I would just burn it.. poof gone up in smoke. Quote
Celeste Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 Yes, I do, always! Fact: My sister-in-law owns 1 home. Last year she received a letter from Utah Power stating that they were shutting off power to all 3 of her residences because 2 of them were months past due to the tune of $1400.00. After going to the police, they found that the other 2 residences had been rented out by, as neighbors stated, illegal immigrants. Upon further investigation, they also found that this same group had bought and defaulted on a car, electronics, and opened up numberous credit card accounts using her identity. Her credit was destroyed and what was really sickening was that SHE had to obtain an attorney and prove that it was not her!! To this date, they have not arrested anyone. Shred, Shred, Shred!! Quote
Cedars Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 I've been shredding or burning for many years now. ID theft isnt new, its just more widespread. Quote
Turtle Posted May 13, 2006 Author Report Posted May 13, 2006 Apparently they started the collecting at 7 am and by 6 pm over 600 people dropped off 56,000+ pounds of paper. They have a truck on-site that shreds & compresses the paper as it comes in. If you crosscut you make the job much harder by at least [(N^2)-N]/2 where "N" is the number of pieces. If you crosscut shred and then wet pulp, they've got to want it real bad. Fascinating! Do you think my garden worms will eat this stuff? Now I am curious how the truck they use shreds, i.e. if it crosscuts, strip cuts, or possibly grinds. :hihi: Quote
Queso Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 I had my identity stolen once . .But then they just gave it back, Quote
Tarantism Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 i am proud to have been part of such a lovely random thread. Quote
ronthepon Posted May 13, 2006 Report Posted May 13, 2006 Shredding is a very unscientific way of destroying documents. I would rather suggest making some kind of a paper incinerator to do the job. Quote
Vagabond -SC2- Posted May 15, 2006 Report Posted May 15, 2006 I shred just about everything. I know shredding is not the end-all be-all but my hope is that more small pieces I make the hard it is for someone and then they may just up and target someone who does not shred (friendly of me eh?) Quote
