ronthepon Posted May 28, 2006 Author Report Posted May 28, 2006 What I did was to get a old iron pipe with loads or rust inside. Then I banged it again and again, and the rust inside kept falling out. Finally, I collected all the rust, heated it for 10 minutes on a LPG flame. Then I finely ground it with a hammer and a seive. PS: Mercedes Benzene, check in your chemist stores for potassium permanganate, although what they may give you may not be pure enough for the glycerine reaction. Quote
Jay-qu Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 did you get the potassium permanganate in crystal form or as a solution? Quote
ronthepon Posted May 28, 2006 Author Report Posted May 28, 2006 did you get the potassium permanganate in crystal form or as a solution? In a nicely crystallised, almost powdered form. Quote
Jay-qu Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 awesome, wish my chemist stocked that. What is it supposed to be used for? Quote
ronthepon Posted May 28, 2006 Author Report Posted May 28, 2006 Drinking water disinfectant, for bath water for preventing skin diseases, and other anti germ stuff. I don't think many people use it for the explosive reaction, as I do. Quote
Jay-qu Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 I think there would be a few.. most chemists will know it is one of the most powerful oxidants, so combined with any fuel.. but you didnt hear it from me. Quote
ronthepon Posted May 28, 2006 Author Report Posted May 28, 2006 What will be the definite markers that will serve as tell-tale signs that the reaction's going well? Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted May 28, 2006 Report Posted May 28, 2006 What will be the definite markers that will serve as tell-tale signs that the reaction's going well?:hihi: hahahhaha. Intense heat, bright light, thick smoke, and molten metal flying everywhere!! Quote
ronthepon Posted May 29, 2006 Author Report Posted May 29, 2006 :) hahahhaha. Intense heat, bright light, thick smoke, and molten metal flying everywhere!!Nice. Then I guess I'll not be unaware of wether it's happening or not. Quote
kyle32123 Posted August 3, 2006 Report Posted August 3, 2006 i need some help with thermite. I made it today, i combined 10 grams of Fe2O3 and 4 geams of Al powder. I put them in the mortle and pestle and mixed them good to a fine powder. I used the magnesium method and the glycerin/kmno4 method to light it and it still wont light. I dont know what im doing wrong. my Al powder is fine i got it from united nuclear. i made my own Fe2O3 by electrolysis of steel/iron rod. one on the anode and one on the cathode. I then took the liquid with the sludge in it witch i thought was iron hydroxide and i boiled it and i got red chuncks and i put them in powder form. That should be Fe2O3 right? I dont know what im doing wrong. Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted August 3, 2006 Report Posted August 3, 2006 i made my own Fe2O3 by electrolysis of steel/iron rod. one on the anode and one on the cathode. There's your problem. You should only use one iron rod, and it should be attached to the cathode. Since you attached iron to both the anode and the cathode, you not only made iron oxide, but I believe you made iron hydroxide. I always make my own iron oxide by burning steel wool, but usually I just buy it. :hihi: Good luck. Quote
kyle32123 Posted August 3, 2006 Report Posted August 3, 2006 So use an iron cathode and a carbon anode??? can i then just boil the mixture down untill i have the iron oxide instead of waiting for it to dry? Quote
