Yes what you say is one reason.

But, for one example, when you put an obese woman into hospital and drastically,draconianically, clinically reduce her calorie level to about 1,000 a day then make her exercise and then she still puts on weight. What is happening?

 

The doctors at first thought patients were smuggling in food. But when they checked this and talked to the women they found this was not happening.

The women patients complained that they were being fed twice as much as they would be normally eating in/at the hospital than at home.

Their systems were obviously super efficient at extracting calories from food.

Why?

I don't think thee will be one simple answer.

 

Look at the Hungerwinter "experiment" in the 1940s in this thread. These days we have skeletal, pre- pubesecent models of beauty in all the media. Do modern women starve themselves in the first 3-4 months of pregnancy so as not to look "fat" (a relative fashion term, at best), or perhaps save on maternity clothes?

It would be fascinating to know this- because of its long term effects on the final weight of the baby/child/ adult.

Look at kangaroos they eat a much leaner diet than cows yet have a much greater uses of energy, Much more active than cows; able to run all day in extreme conditions. A cow would not survive on the scrubby native grasses they eat. Kangaroo faeces is about the size of a pea. Cow faeces is the size of a dinner plate. Kangaroos produce no methane; cows produces masses. Are the bacteria in kangaroo's stomachs much more efficient than the cows?

We need to get away from the "one meme fits all approach" to obesity and start to look at what has happened in just the last, mere ,10-15 years to humans.

I am just saying the eat too much and not exercise idea does not fit all the facts and I think that "is funny/strange"

Cows have methanogens living in their guts - hence the tons of methane they introduce into the atmosphere. Kangaroos apparently produce acetate which is a short-chain fatty acid produced by bifidobacteria, and those bifidobacteria are very beneficial to gut health, particularly in the prevention of bowel cancer. I'm not too sure of the role the bifis play in obesity, though.

From 6th Grade to the end of 7th grade I gained 80 pounds.

 

I am in 10th Grade now, I weigh just shy of 200 pounds, I'm only 5-11, I run 8 laps around a quarter mile track, (about 2 miles) every single day, I am on multiple work out routines better than what most non-athletes do, such as fitness and conditioning drill camps and other things designed to push me to be a state champion on my wrestling team. I've been on an improved alternate day fasting diet.

Ddespite my best efforts, I either gain 20 pounds one week, or lose a mere 1 pound every 2 weeks.

 

It's safe to say no matter what I do I'm steadily gaining weight for an unknown reason.

 

I know plenty of anorexic kids that have NO diet, and don't work out at all, and typically eat a lot.

 

Whereas I don't eat ANYTHING every other day, and eat little, and I mean little, the other days. I eat just enough to be healthy, yet I feel stuffed whenever I eat.

 

I might have this virus.

Eighty pounds in two years is a huge amount. Have you seen a doctor about it?

 

Fasting is not a good idea. It makes your body think that it is starving, and should hold onto everything that goes down your throat. Rather try eating three moderate, balanced meals every day, with a small snack of nuts or veggie sticks between each to keep your blood sugar at an even level.

There are many many reasons for obesity. Most of which our conservative medical establishment has not come to grips with yet.

 

A virus is only ONE possibility

 

I don't know how to advise you because this area of medicine is so new

However you should go though the posts in this Thread and read them and the links associated with them one by one. perhaps you may find somethng that 'chimes' or rings bells with you personally.

 

A comprehensive medical check-up (using specialists not just the local GP) would be a good idea in case their is a hormonal or other problem.

I here there are some medical conditions that make people more prone to become overweight - not overweight prone to it. These people just have to live with it, like people that have food allergies or diabeties

Those people that eat crappy food (the pop-tarts, donuts, fries etc) might not put on weight now, but I think it will catch up with them sooner or later and in one way or another - weight gain and/or serious health problems like cancer. I know guys who ate anything and everthing in their teens and were bean poles, but in their mid-twenties they started gaining weight.

 

I agree with the others - you've got to get this checked out by a doctor. Also, don't skip meals because that will have the oposite effect of what you're trying to achieve. Eat well, eat small portions, and keep active. It's not all about getting the girls. Work hard, get a great job, be very successful. You don't need to be attractive to do that; you need to have a brilliant mind and a drive to achieve. I didn't have a boyfriend at school. I wasn't particularly pretty and I was shy, and I always lost out to the girls who were pretty and outgoing and who could flirt. It sucked and my self-esteem was very low. But I'm happily married now to a guy who loves me for who I am.

 

Jay-qu is right, though. If you have a health problem sometimes you really do just have to live with it. I do everything I can to keep my asthma and allergies under control, but I still have asthma attacks, and I still have sinus infections and it all drives me crazy. But that's just how it is. I didn't get the perfect body and I have to deal with that. I have to focus on my strengths and utilise those.

 

Your first step Gardamorg is to see a doctor and find out why you're gaining weight. Seriously, do this. Let us know what they say and we can take things from there.

It could be as Mynah says - a sort of malnutrition problem (wrong food or cutting down on what your body needs). Try the raw food diet or at least look it up as cooking destroys nutrients and people on this diet do lose weight, without having to necessarily eat boring meals, just mostly cold ones.

 

The other real alternative is allergies causing bloating as malnutrition will - think of a wasp sting etc. and how the tissue swells (I think this explains the Pima Indians weight gain, since meeting the white man). If it is allergies you need to go on an exclusion diet, cutting out particular foods for a particular time period and measuring the effects, if any of each food group.

 

Anything outside these two groups is more difficult to diagnose and treat I believe (viral etc).

 

Hope this helps or at least gives you are start - both the above are easily locatable on the internet (Don't kill yourself yet, it could just be puppy fat - as Michaelangelica says (hormonal) and may disappear rapidly after puberty - again look it up on the net as a subject or ask your family doctor, if approachable: It's not the end of the world (That's next Thursday) but may just feel like it at your age. I was nicknamed 'Taf' by my brothers friends because it was 'fat' backwards (The school photo shows this great, big, grey blob that (me) but boy you should see me now! Could well be from the sound of it - this is probably what Michaelangelica meant by hormonal too as a cause but I as being specific to your age and using common language for the condition, so you'd recognize it, if it was.

The following was written by my wife, she has struggled her entire life with weight. She was chubby when we met, fat when we married and obese shortly there after. If anyone has a handle on the problem of weight it's her. She was a body builder for a while and eventually found out her weight problem was glandular. She won the battle eventually but not with out fighting a war. It always broke my heart to see her trying to please a world that could not be pleased. Her words should be taken seriously.

You don't have a virus, you have something called "adolescence." Your body is still maturing and growing. The diet you described is not helping your metabolism: you starve one day & eat only enough to get by the other days. Also, you need to rest your body every other day from weight training. Exercise can also be taken to an unhealthy level.This is not a healthy regeim, especially at your age. My son, age 20 went through this same phase of thinking he was fat at about the age you are now. He is currently at a healthy weight, eats on a regular basis and exercises. Your body needs fuel in order to build muscle mass and to burn fat. Please see your family Dr. and get on a healthy diet for a young man of your age. In order for your body to burn fat, you need to "fuel the fires" so to speak. Eat a good quality diet, (a balance of proteins and carbs-there are good carbs)small meals several times a day and exercise will keep your body fueled to burn more fat, thus helping build more lean muscle mass. It won't happen overnight, but it will build a good health regime that will keep you from being overweight. Losing 1/2 # a week is a good steady way to keep it off. When you lose or gain 20# in such a short time, it puts your metabolism in a shocked state, your system can't adjust, thus the start of yo-yo dieting...making it that much harder to lose even that 1/2 a week.

Please don't be so hard on yourself, you are a normal young man, and your body still is growing and maturing. Please ask your family to help you with a better nutrition and exercise plan. Also, discuss this with your wrestling coach.

Gardamorg, I can also give you a few words on the problem with girls. My youngest son had a weight problem through high school, girls just didn't see him as boy friend material. I gave the tools to deal with this and now he has lots of girl friends as well as a very special girl friend. My advice to him was to always treat girls like people, listen to what they say, be interested in them for something besides sex. Young girls are fickle, at your age they usually don't know which end is up, of course this is true for guys too. Treat girls with respect and dignity, don't make them feel like your interest is just sexual. Be friends with them, listen to their problems, make their problems yours. Eventually the girls will change from chasing the bad boys to wanting a good man. My son who by the way weighs exactly the same as you and is 5'11" as well has lots of girl friends. When they are hurt they come to him, when they need a friend they come to him. when they need a escort across campus late at night they come to him. when the girls get together to party he is the first guy they invite. His girl friend came to me one day and thanked me for raising a man she could love and trust, she said he was a real keeper because she felt like he was a real friend not just someone who was looking for a sex buddy. At your age (and I do remember 10th grade) sexual attraction to girls is almost over whelming but if you can suppress that and see girls as something more and show them you feel like they are something more than sex objects you will gain their respect and when they start looking for a real man you will be at the top of their list. Until then treat them with respect no matter how they treat you, don't let your self be swayed by the other pin heads that cannot control their emotions. You will be the "Man" one day, trust me.

Actually, no.

 

Have the nurse at your school do it. All you have to do is fast the night before school then have the nurse take your blood sugar (nurses are qualified, capable, and should be willing to help - it's easier than taking blood pressure). If your blood sugar is over 110 after not eating for 10 to 12 hours then you're diabetic and your nurse will tell you to see a doctor.

 

As far as I would have guessed - most all overweight children are tested for diabetes. It could easily be a major source of your problem and damaging if untreated.

 

But, I agree with everyone else as well - go see a doctor.

 

And, don't worry about the girls. Think of the big picture. I was socially retarded in high school, but was one of the most popular people in my college dorm. Life's weird that way. My advice would be to put yourself out there socially - not for the girls - for yourself. Join the math/chess/chemistry/debate club. Contribute time to a community center or shelter. Get a part time job at a retail store. Learn to play an instrument. Buy a broken down mustang and rebuild it. Get involved in politics - etc. Counterintuitively, doing those things for you with no thought of girls at all will help with the girls. :)

As Michaelangelica mentioned, it's not necessarily always the case that a virus is causing weight gain or obesity--it's one of many possible factors. I agree with the others in the thread that you should see a doctor if you can and have him look at things like any drugs or medicines you may be taking (e.g., antidepressants or painkillers which may have weight gain as a side effect), glands, hormones, iodine intake, or your thyroid. For example, hypothyroidism, I think, can also cause undue and fast weight gain. I've seen the opposite--hyperthyroidism--when one of my friends who was overweight suddenly lost about 50 pounds in just a few months and had an abnormally fast metabolism. He was forced to see a doctor after he started hallucinating and couldn't sleep for several days, for which he required immediate treatment, surgery, and medicine. Afterwards, he was all right. If you do notice a problem, try to find out what's going on and treat it quick.

 

Regarding the people who seem like they can eat whatever they want and keep the weight off, it might be a matter of metabolism, genetics, habits, or what they do that you don't know they're doing. There are a tremendous amount of things that affect weight and the body's maintenance of weight. A lot of teenagers and young twenty-somethings can eat almost whatever they want, but it will come back to haunt them--there's no such thing as endless days of sodas, chips, and popcorn. Many of my friends have already become chubby at 26 or 27 years old, and we all started off skinny back in high school.
