Good question. I worked in & around pools for many years & we tested the water often for chlorine & PH. I forget the numbers, but here's a link & quote from it.

The main problem with maintaining pool chemistry is people not showering before intering the pool...& yes peeing in it. One minute you have a perfectly optimum chemistry, then you get 100 grundimllies & all bets are off.:D
