Skyfish

The guy on the link is just one of many capturing these unusual objects. I have taped some myself, & made some calculations on the range of size, speed, & closeness to the lens that must constrain them. I compared those measurements to known bird & bugs that I also taped & with web info on how fast different creatures fly & how. I had to conclude I didn't have enough information to identify the 'rods' on my tape as bugs or birds. Even accounting for blurring, these things moved faster than bugs can. (max bug speed about 35 mph)

Get us some more links on 'rods' Ugha if you please, and look for the guys with the best credentials.

Uhh...I'm sorry but my habit is to reuse tapes when I finish with them so I can't post a photo.:D

Whether or not these effects can be faked is beside the point, I'm happy to accept Turtle as a reliable witness.

Initially I'm interested in the connection with video, is this an effect of video technology? If skyfish can be observed by other means, this possibility can be discounted. My second suggestion would be an investigation from the angle of weather.

Why thank you Ughaibu. :) I don't recall seeing anyone with these 'rods' on film, but since I found them on a digital video tape I also question if it's the technology. Possibly a cascade on the CCD itself or in the translation of the CCD output to a screen/tape representation.

I searched around the web & found mostly the one guy promoting this, but I have seen a news clip in which a 'rod' flies through the scene. As I use my camera to watch clouds & the sky quite often, I'll keep an eye out now for the effect before rewinding & over-taping.
