Woops.

I read that as "how many generations did I personally know".

 smeghead

I only personally knew 2, but a cousin of mine did a geneology in the 80's and I think he pushed that back to either 4 or 5 generations.

The earliest I could track down (direct ancestor on my father's side), is a guy born in 1564 in Habsburg, Germany. I don't have the charts an' stuff with me right now, but at 25 years (+-) a generation, that should be around 17 generations.

From my mother's side, nada. Except my grandmother, who turned 92 today, and I still haven't phoned her!!!!!!!!!

[off to phone grandmother, feeling like a horse's ***...]

Thanks to my paternal grandfather, who worked very hard before his passing, I have information of our family back just previous to Napolean... My own father then translated his papers into a database, which I kept when he passed.

Actually my mother has traced our family history .. back 253 generations .. Amazing eh ??

The power of technology has allowed for re-connections of families all over the world .. imagine where you could go ..??

NO ****IN' WAAAAAY!!!!

That's like, close on 6,000 years! At 25 years a generation! What kinda records did your mother go on?!

You think that is far... I just finished an exhaustive search and found that Turtle and I are distanly related. This is going back on my Mother's side to a few years before Judism. A few generations before the migration to Europe. A few centries before the discovery of fire. A couple generations before walking upright. And just a couple of evolutionalry steps back toward the water.

I was not aware of my amphibian heritage, but I will now take very seriously any Anti-terrapinic remarks! The man can't keep the shelled down any more!!

She traced her descent back to the China at first .. from lil ole NZ .. and she came from scotland ..

I know I was amazed also and didnt believe her at first .. till she showed me .. she has made a lifetime of tracing our genetic trail .. she found people all over the world willing to send her information ..

Eventually she came across the mongolians .. in our family history ..

She used the principle that every man and woman can be traced back to the first 50 or so .. original people .. I'll go see my mom and ask her if I can print some of her work on here ..

She has written a text book for lecturers - it is used in studies in the Universities here and is a required reading .. only a teacher could write a book like that lol ;)

I'll get back to you ..

We're not talkin' about genetics!

We're talking 'bout your Dad being Fred, his dad being Stanley, his dad being George, his dad being Ed, etc.

Names! - on paper! That's the name o' the game!

Genetically, I can trace my roots back about a gajillion years!

I had too much to drink, and therefore will switch me PC off. As of now.

Good night one, good night all.

Why go back only 9 generations? Thats only 200 years or so.

Polls allow a maximum of 10 choices so I made the last choice 9 or more generations. Consider it a preliminary poll if you wish, with the goal of finding a good range of poll options for a geneology poll. :ebomb:

I took it as how many I know of - which is 3 my last remaining greatgrandmother passed just last year :ebomb:

but I know there is some books around that trace back much much further, apparently along my dads line, some 200 years back, my ancestor stole a pocket watch that landed him on a boat out to Australia

Well... My Grandfather has done some extensive reasearch on the good ol' family tree, personally I don't get too interested in that sort of thing. But I did find it interesting that on my dad's side I'm related to President William Howard Taft (A great great something uncle of mine) and on my mom's side I'm related to a few famous people... Another president (William McKinley, another uncle I believe.). I can't remember if my next relative was the first one hit with a cannon ball in the entire Civil War, or just one of the battles in it :hammer:... I also don't remember his name, lol. He was my Grandfather's great great something uncle, I don't know what that would make him to me though. And finally my mom's great great something aunt was Mary Queen of Scots (beheaded).

Seems like I've got quite a bit royalty in my line =].

On my mother's father's side of the family I can trace an ancestor to 1636 who arrived in America in that year from England. He was murdered during King Philip's War in 1675. Not sure if we can go further back in time.

I only really know about my mom's side of the family since they're all nuts about investigating the family tree. I think it's because they're sort of snobbish, well a lot snobbier than i am anyway, and they like to provide evidence of how well connected our family is throughout Europe. Personally i think we're a bunch of mongrels... The human equivalent of a pavement special :) It is nice to know where i come from though.

All I know is this, one of my Ancestors, the founder of the MacLean clan, was named Ioan and he lived in Lean. I am named Ian, which is derivided of Ioan (pronounced something like Yohan, joan, or john.). I've met my great Grandmother and most of her extended family (that is still alive concidering she is 86 or something like that.).

I probably could trace my family way back, but I'm lazy.
