Boerseun Posted May 30, 2006 Report Posted May 30, 2006 How can I connect my Gmail account to be accessed from Outlook on my laptop? I've done everything I should, but I have sneaking suspicion that in setting up the Outlook mailbox, the URL for the http server would be something else than http://www.gmail.com... Any ideas? I'm running Outlook 2003, btw. Quote
Boerseun Posted May 30, 2006 Author Report Posted May 30, 2006 Got it sorted... I'm a knob. Click "Help" on Gmail - some people are just too proud to do that... [/blush] Quote
C1ay Posted May 30, 2006 Report Posted May 30, 2006 Why would anyone want to use Lookout anyhow? Thunderbird is less virus friendly :hammer: Quote
Boerseun Posted May 30, 2006 Author Report Posted May 30, 2006 We have to, for this bloody stupid app we're using. And I thought I had it licked, by Gmail's help, but with somehow it still won't connect and do what it should... Damn. Damn. Double Damn... Quote
C1ay Posted May 30, 2006 Report Posted May 30, 2006 Is it broke both ways, sending and receiving? Did you enable POP in your GMail settings? What port numbers did you set for SMTP and POP3? Did you check the box for SSL to use an encrypted connection? Quote
Jay-qu Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 you have to enable POP access on your account, then run yourself through the tutorial here and it will help you configure all the settings so it works  Quote
Boerseun Posted May 31, 2006 Author Report Posted May 31, 2006 Yeah - got the ports at 995 and 465, as the manual said I should. When I test the account settings, I get different results each time. Sometimes it can send a test email, then the very next time I try it, it can't - like a time-out. And I have set the time-outs to 10 minutes, so it shouldn't be that. Somewhere, there's a bloody ghost in this here machine... Quote
Jay-qu Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 hehe, so long as it obeys the three laws :D you know hypobot doesnt know the laws! I tried to teach him but couldnt.. as for you problem, :phones: sorry Quote
Boerseun Posted May 31, 2006 Author Report Posted May 31, 2006 Seems to be working fine, now - for some funny reason. I suspect the Google guys were doing something on their servers... Quote
C1ay Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 then the very next time I try it, it can't - like a time-out. And I have set the time-outs to 10 minutes...It is. I quit using POP on GMail because of the timeouts..... Quote

Jay-qu Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 Don't forget the zeroeth law. BillAnd what is that? I also stoped using POP access on my gmail account.. I just find it faster to log in. Quote
Tormod Posted May 31, 2006 Report Posted May 31, 2006 And what is that? I also stoped using POP access on my gmail account.. I just find it faster to log in. The zeroth law of robotics says that a robot cannot harm, or through inaction let come to harm, humanity. It overrides all the other laws of robotics, and was thought up by two - robots. :naughty: Read your Asimov, man. Quote
Jay-qu Posted June 1, 2006 Report Posted June 1, 2006 I know that law, but I thought it was the first.. So I read up in wiki and apparently it was modified and had to be given 'zeroth' position to maintain the order of 'where it does not conflict with the above laws' :) P.S I love Asimov Quote
Lancaster Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 GMail has such a great interface, and no ads like other web-based email services. I realized that after watching a friend use hotmail. Quote

Lancaster Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 I'm assuming its the most up to date one, I'm looking at it right now and the only ads I see are on top of the main box, and those can be turned off. Quote
