ronthepon
I'll tell you all what to do. Lets try imagining. Imagine you are in a spaceship which is about to collide with a big rock. Now what's the best thing to do? Stop imagining.
Pyrotex
well I was thinking that if we seal off your wardrobe and take the hit there it should be completely contained. There would also be sufficent 'cushioning' in there :hihi::evil:     :naughty: :naughty: :naughty: :naughty: :naughty: You're just jealous because my Guccis are real and yours are Hong Kong knock-offs!

ronthepon
Allright, I'll just express myself freely. WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT?! I happen to be dying of curiosity.
TheFaithfulStone
We're all going to die of exhaustion. TFS
Janus
"Still getting data. It looks like it is 10 minutes out. Probablity of impact is in the upper 80%. We do not have a solution for evasion yet. That may take another minute..." "It is an asteroid. Looks to be as much as half a meter in diameter. Unknown composition." Now I know why everyone is so keen on getting their hands on the Prophesy, it's for our radar system! Consider this, the ship was nearing the end of our burn when we had our "incident". Even using the longer of the Earth to Jupiter trip times discussed, we have to be moving in the order of 100 km/sec. This means that the meteroid is coming in at this order of velocity or faster. With a closing rate of 100 km/ sec, in order for for it to be detected 10 mins out, our radars would have had to pick up an object 1/2 meter across while it was still around 60,000 km away!. Not only pick it up, but pinpoint its position and trajectory well enough to predict an 80% chance of collision.

Our radar systems are able to take all our 2-meter antennas on ship and using interferometry, have the resolution of a single 200-meter antenna. And our avionics use Pentium-7 chips. Pyrotex
...WHAT'S GOING TO HAPPEN NEXT?!....Well, we figure out how the nanobots work, their coded message, and their creators, which may create more tension as the creators could be someone very close to us. (!!) Then there's the algae-fungus that starts growing in the air duct system, which mutates. (!!) We have to complete our thrust sequence to get to Jupiter, and there are untold risks there, of course. (!!) There's the gratuitous Gamma Ray Burster that we observe, which knocks our network servers off line. (!!) We orbit Jupiter, which requires another big burn--you know, if it isn't right on the money, we might wind up in a collision trajectory with one of the moons. Say Io. (!!) Volcanic plumes can be rough on the external paint job. (!!) We might even have to go down and land on Io to obtain rare heavy metals to fix our whatchamacallit system, and encounter huge moonquakes, sulfur lava, and creepy-crawlies. (!!) I don't think there's any problem of us getting bored, now, do you? :hihi: oh yeah, and what are we going to do with that genius/infant AI system that's "growing" in our computers?? What if it gets hungry????
