BluesMan Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 Suicide is legal in all states. (This was true 8 years ago, not sure, if any laws have been passed since then). Oregon has assisted suicide. What are your thoughts? How does this affect Autonomy? Quote
InfiniteNow Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 Concerning the legality of suicide, it's kind of hard to punish someone after they've killed themselves, no? Suicide being illegal is probably not much of a deterrant for this reason. Also, autonomy is probably not the biggest concern for someone considering ending their own life. Kidding aside, cigarette merchants engage in assisted suicide every day. Quote
cwes99_03 Posted June 7, 2006 Report Posted June 7, 2006 I think those numbers have to be off. What it shows is that white men who are over 70 years old are 2 to 5 times more likely to kill themselves than teenagers. Quote

What are your thoughts? How does this affect Autonomy? Those numbers are about right.Qwess... Elderly people Do have the highest rate of suicide...Learned that in psych 211. (Human Dvevelopment)Its more common than people realize. The difference being that Teenagers who commit suicide forfeit a potential lifetime, whereas Elderly people have lived most of their life already. Very familiar with assisted suicide here in Oregon, although I am across the river technically in Washington, we get all our news from Portland.anywayz.. It hasn't really been a "big" issue lately, but the Bush administration doesn't want it...and have tried to stop it.It's reserved for terminally ill patients; and its occurance is relatively low. I may search for some stats... I don't have a problem with it.If someone wants to die, or is gonna' die a painful lingering death, then thats their perogative. If somone really wants to commit suicide, there is very little you can do. IDMclean Posted June 8, 2006 Report Posted June 8, 2006 In my eyes Suicide, is part of the Right to Live. It is your choice wheather you live or die and no one can, or should be able to take that away from you. Those numbers look right to me, my great grandfather Henry committed suicide via heavy pistol, out in the garden of his manor. He was a racist and couldn't stand that he had to have his (black) maid help him out of the bath each night. Christianity has some views on this one, which I can't say that I share. The worst offender being instant damnation for suicides. I say if your life sucks that bad, if you suffer so much that the pain of living is worse than the pain of dying, then you should be allowed to end it. For younin's like myself, I advocate assistance from the community as a whole. Above and beyond Psychiatric evaluation and treatment. A potential suicide should know just how important they are to the community, which is a scary thing to comtemplate with such apathetic people in the USA. Quote
Racoon Posted June 8, 2006 Report Posted June 8, 2006 Here are those Statistics on Oregon's Assisted Suicide, or as the Liberals would call it, "Death with Dignity". http://www.internationaltaskforce.org/orstats.htm This was somewhat modeled and similar to the Netherlands. :singer: Quote
