Lord Hakk Posted June 19, 2006 Report Posted June 19, 2006 I was thinking....You know how there are refferences to the earth stopping which say we would go flying off into space? well if the earth stopped spinning(as a natural thing) wouldnt that mean that just the core stopped? so the earth would still go around the core for days, months, years, maybe even decades, without us noticing.(untill we start having noticibly longer days). we wouldnt die right? atleast when the core stopped spinning. when it stopped moving we would freeze on the dark side of the earth right?-just some thoughts Quote
Drip Curl Magic Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 I'm sure any dramatic change like that would kill us in a decently short period of time. don't you? Quote
ronthepon Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 If the earth will stop spinning, it will revolve. So the sun will shine on a place for 6 months. We won't die, but it will be devastating. Climates will be of the sort that winds will blow in one direction all the time, ice will build up over six months, then suddenly dissapear. We'll have to be moving all the time. Eventually, organisms of different charecters will come to dominate. Perhaps climatic adaptations will begin to appear. Ogranisms underwater will probably feel the least effects. Quote
IDMclean Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 Ummm... there are some issues with this, in regards to survivability. For instance Heating, and Cooling, Freezing. Imagine vast ice fields for months, and each "day" the dark side gets a little bit cooler, as the Light side becomes a scorching Desert and the ocean on this side boils from extended exposure to solar radiation. Also if the Dynamo theory of the earth applies, we have to contend without a Magnetic shield to deflect the majority of Cosmic radiation. Quote
Lancaster Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 It just goes to show how strangely perfect the natural cycle of our planet is. Quote
InfiniteNow Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 Even if the Earth keeps spinning, each of us will die. It's pretty much guarenteed to happen at some point. Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 And just so we're all clear, everyone and everything would die INSTANTLY if the earth stopped spinning... unless it progressively slowed down over a long period of time. What a scary thought.... Quote
InfiniteNow Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 And just so we're all clear, everyone and everything would die INSTANTLY if the earth stopped spinning... unless it progressively slowed down over a long period of time. Can you support the statement above? Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 Think about it.The earth is spinning at something like 1600 mph. If all of a sudden the earth stopped spinning (1600-0 mph in under a second), the G-forces would be so immense that we'd just... die. Not to mention we'd all just fly into everything else at 1600 mph. No way to survive. Utter destruction. Everything...Gone. Quote

I would like to see some evidence to support these extreme claims. Cheers. Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted June 21, 2006 Report Posted June 21, 2006 Please infinite, I'm not trying to be rude. Well I'm sorry for being so frank... but science proves it. It's basic physics. If the earth stops, we keep moving: due to Sir Isaac Newton's First Law of Motion. This is because we are not actually attached to the earth. Therefore, the G-forces acting upon us would kill us instantly. I think we die around 8 g's.Here is the link to a g-force calculator, but I don't feel like figuring out how many rpm the earth spins at.... and all the other stuff required. But I can give you the speed at which the earth spins and you could probably figure it out from there...http://www.msu.edu/~venkata1/gforce.htm Quote
Lancaster Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 hmmm... I have an idea! Let's try it out! Oh wait...Guess you're going to have a hard time proving it... And I don't think he said that it would go from 1600-0 instantly. I think we're talking long term here. Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 OKay. Well I was referring to the earth stopping instantly! hahaha.By the way, I was mistaken when I said a force of 8 g's was enough to kill. That's enough to knock someone out. But I would imagine that death would follow soon after... And I did some quick calculations (and i'm no physics major, so someone please correct me), and the earth going from a conservative 1300 mph to 0 in 1 second would induce g-forces of 59.3 on everyone and everything...I'm sure that is enough to kill. Quote
Lancaster Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 Well, yeah. Don't fighter pilots sometimes take around 8 g's? Granted, they have g-force suits... Quote
Zythryn Posted June 22, 2006 Report Posted June 22, 2006 And I don't think he said that it would go from 1600-0 instantly. I think we're talking long term here. Ack:eek:  The earth is slowing down. Quick, we better destroy the moon now before it is too late!!:hihi: (sorry, I've got the bad sense of humor back under control:)) Moderation note: A reply to this post was moved from to 18977 because it was a question about the future of the universe, not just the motion of the Earth Quote
