A friend told me that you can fill computer cases with corn syrup because it doesn't conduct electricity. Is this even possible? I'm used to 0wning him when he talks about anything, so can you help me out?

There are some simple tests you can do to see if corn syrup conducts electricity.I sure you can think of a few.Of course,be careful.

Dont worry, careful is my middle name, right next to Pyromaniac... ...... now all i need is a few gallons of corn syrup and an extention cord.............

it's just like putting your computer in oil, it can be done, but what a waste of corn syrup... i prefer mine on my pancakes next to my computer... see there is a much better use of corn syrup

and it will probably work, corn syrup is a coctail of water and fructose mainly, neither the water nor the sugar conduct electricity, also the boiling point of corn syrup is quite a bit higher then water, so i dont see why this shall not work...

As far as I am aware, pure water in itself is not a conductor of electricity. It is the chemicals and impurities in water that conduct the electricity. In water, chemicals break up in ions - for example, Sodium Chloride (NaCl - table salt) breaks up into Na+ ions and Cl- ions. The sodium has a positive charge and the chlorine has a negative charge. There may also be deposits of metals such as phosphorus or potassium, or even heavy metals such as lead and iron or aluminium.

yes it are the salts and metals that are responsible for water conductivity, however i can also understand that water does have some impurities in the tree, as it transports minerals to places where they are needed and stored, however i beleive that you should have hard time finding salts and heavy metals in the tree "sap" because i think they are bad for the trees as well as for us.... this would be more of a biology question really...

I assumed Lancaster was talking about commercial corn syrup and not pure maple syrup.I have no idea what impurities might be in commercial corn syrup(tap water, added salts, metals from machinary,etc.).I think you're right that one should have hard time finding salts and heavy metals in tree sap or corn for that matter...of course I'm way over my head with this subject, and slightly off topic.

sorry, i got carried away with syrups, no corn syrup is even mor predictable, corn syrup is water, sugar and corn starch cooked, even commercialy there is very little else added to the mix, i think that you could fill your computer with either corn or maple syrup, it should not matter really, and work all the same... mmm sugaricious

How about honey? It has anti-microbial properties & so will keep the computer from catching a virus.
