TheFaithfulStone Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Yeah. Actually, that sounds really cool - you could do a kind "birth" thing - where all of the space travelers that have been living in the water for like 10 years or whatever are arriving at their destination, and they're all afraid they're going to "drown" when the fluid is drained. Not really to subtle, but nice, all the same. TFS Quote
IDMclean Posted October 17, 2006 Author Report Posted October 17, 2006 Also imagine the various physical tramaus of being squeezed from one's mother. It would be closterphobic, I think. Quote
Jay-qu Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 keep passengers in a pod like in the matrix, then if you can figure out the mind/computer interface all the passengers will be kept occupied for the duration of the journey :) Quote
Boerseun Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 An old sci-fi trick, cryogenic freezing, would still be best, I think. And they have frozen and successfully revived a beagle a few years ago, I seem to remember, so this technique might just be emerging from sci-fi to reality. If you freeze the bastards, they won't be bored for the 40,000 years it'll take to get to the nearest star at currently achievable speeds... Only problem, however, if they radio their arrival back home to Earth, Earthlings might think that ET finally made contact! They're speaking in a weird language! And it's aimed straight at Earth! Who are these aliens?!?! What are their intentions!?!?! Do they want to come here and eat us?!?! - and then Earth will probably self-destruct in a fit of paranoia. Quote
TheFaithfulStone Posted October 17, 2006 Report Posted October 17, 2006 Not so weird after all. It's possible to "induce" hibernation in animals that don't normally hibernate through the use of hydrogen sulfide, or the "Hibernation Induction Trigger." Whether or not this extends people's lives I think has yet to be seen. But, still, it would be neat to fall asleep one day, and wake up on Alpha Centauri or something. TFS Quote
