Turtle Posted July 17, 2006 Report Posted July 17, 2006 How many museum visits have you made in the last year? No restriction as to type I think, so whether it's an art museum, military museum, natural history, etc. it counts as a visit. Add your comments & qualifiers here to the thread.:cup: Quote
Turtle Posted July 17, 2006 Author Report Posted July 17, 2006 All righty thens! Poll is made & I have voted; here's some specifics. I voted 1 to 3 as I have visited just 1 museum this past year, and a year ago at that. I went last Summer to OMSI (Oregon Museum of Science & Industry) in Portland Oregon. I have vistited this museum in its different locations some dozen or more times over the last couple of decades, & while it is well done for children I always find the exhibits of little interest to myself. The museum I want to go see again is the Maryhill museum along the Columbia River near Goldendale Washington. It houses a wonderful art collection and in particular I want to look over the displays of Native American artifacts. I spent a week in Washington DC once & visited dozens of museums including the Smithsonian. Just mentioning it & I can visualize the Hope Diamond.:) This concludes this irregularly scheduled museum tour.:cup: Quote
Janus Posted July 17, 2006 Report Posted July 17, 2006 I put 4 to 6 In the last year I have been to the Experience Music Project in Seattle, The Science Fiction Museum in Seattle (A great collection, including Captian Kirk's original chair.)On this last 4th of July, I went to the Oregon Historical Society, where thet had exhibit on American Presidents featurign pieces on loan from the Smithsonian. And just this last Saturday I visited the Evergreen Aviation Museum in McMinnville, OR. (Home the Hughes H-4(HK-1)Flying Boat, a.k.a the Spruce Goose.) Tons of planes and other flight related items including a LEM and Lunar rover: and a Titan II rocket, (Seen here nestled up to the Spuce Goose.) (If you look at the very left of the picture you'll the engine intake of a pilotless drone of simular design to the SR-71. To the left of that and out of the picture is an actual SR-71 Blackbird.) Mercedes Benzene Posted July 18, 2006 Report Posted July 18, 2006 I have visited many in the last year.-Various art museums-Spy museum-Various Smithsonian Museums I love museums. Living near D.C. fuels that passion. Quote
Michaelangelica Posted July 18, 2006 Report Posted July 18, 2006 I visited one electronically.Does that count?http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/home.phphttp://www.powerhousemuseum.com/exhibitions/index.asphttp://www.powerhousemuseum.com/previous/index.asp My kids gave me aversion therapy to the actual site. Turtle Posted July 18, 2006 Author Report Posted July 18, 2006 I visited one electronically.Does that count?http://www.powerhousemuseum.com/home.php My kids gave me aversion therapy to the actual site. The electroniqé museum does not count for the poll, no. However, when I clicked on that first link I saw a photo of large kites that I have seen before so I'll give partial credit. Add to that the fact you visited with children at some point in time, & we'll call it a push.B) You bring up an interesting aside, inasmuch as the link says "powerhouse"; while operating powerhouses aren't museums, I have enjoyed touring quite a variety. Having a friend who is an electrical engineer got me personal tours of coal fired plants, & diesel plants, & being a citizen in the right place at the right time got me guided tours of a nuclear generating plant, a brand spankin' new natural gas fired job down the street, & numerous dams.Anyway, I digress.:) Back on track & a tip o' the fedora to Micha for the museum website thought, here's the page for the Maryhill Museum I mentioned.http://www.maryhillmuseum.org/ Quote
bryankennedy Posted July 18, 2006 Report Posted July 18, 2006 I have made hundreds of museum trips in the last year, but I am sorta cheating because I work at one, The Science Museum of Minnesota. I attend the Walker Art Center and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts quite regularly as well. I made a trip to London earlier this year and must have seen over 20 museums, some of which I visited 2-3 times. Kinda a junkie I guess. I would have to say my favorite museum would be the Mutter Museum in Philidalphia. Oh and in reference to the above comment about a virtual museum visit...way to go. I think that totally counts...again I might be biased since I help build online experiences for museums. Not to sidetrack the discussion, but I would be curious what people's favorite online museums are as well. Quote

Michaelangelica Posted July 18, 2006 Report Posted July 18, 2006 Oh and in reference to the above comment about a virtual museum visit...way to go. THANKYOU !!When I stayed in Sydney for a week my kids MADE me go EVERY!!day. It was torture. It was an old "Powerhouse " as in coal Quote
Tarantism Posted July 18, 2006 Report Posted July 18, 2006 i go to lost of museums, usually with my grandfather. my favorite as a kid was always the california acdemy of sciences, but they shut that down some years ago and moved it to downtown SF for some remodeling on the golden gate park location. the GGP location, directly across from the D.Young art museum, is expected to open back up in 2008 or so. i cant wait! Tormod Posted July 18, 2006 Report Posted July 18, 2006 I haven't been to many art museums lately because of the kids (we're not among the "Sunday is art day" crowd :hihi: ). But last fall I visited the Glacier Museum together with Killean from Hypography, it was a nice museum about how glaciers are formed and how they shape the landscape. It is in Fjærland, Norway, about an hours' drive from our summer house. lefthttp://hypography.com/gallery/files/5/DSC00042_thumb.jpg[/img]The stave church 9 kilometers from here also has guided tours etc and must be considered a museum - it is from 1150 and is Norway's oldest. We're going over there again today, it's such a beautiful place. They have guided tours, but it's also nice just to hang out there. The place simply feels ancient and the view from there is stunning. You can see the fjord to the north and south from that point, since the church is situated on a high point (strategically very smart here in the fjord country). In fact, the church is built on top of the remains of another church, and archeologists think they have found traces of an even earlier church, possibly dating all the way back to the early years after 1030, when Norway was "officially" Christened after a decisive war. Back home in Oslo I rarely get to see many museums but I have been at the Museum of Science and Technology a couple of times this past year, both as a visitor (with friends and kids) and also as a lecturer for the Space Centre during special events etc. Do aquariums count? We visited a really nice Ocean Aquarium in Ålesund on the north west coast of Norway a few days back. They have giant aquariums with salt water fish, shellfish, crabs, lobsters, and just about any other small thing you can find in the oceans and fjords. I reckon they have borrowed all the fish from our local fjord and put them there for the summer. Racoon 1 Quote
Jay-qu Posted July 18, 2006 Report Posted July 18, 2006 I went to a science museum just a few weeks ago - but not much else in the last year.. maybe a few historical sites from wars etc, but not exactly museums Quote
ronthepon Posted July 18, 2006 Report Posted July 18, 2006 Museums are things we don't seem to find in this city... Quote
Chacmool Posted July 18, 2006 Report Posted July 18, 2006 I visited the Louvre for the very first time in my life this year. What an amazing place! I spent a whole day there, and still didn't see everything. It was well worth travelling halfway around the world to see it. I also saw the palace at Versailles, with its almost obscene overindulgence. Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted July 18, 2006 Report Posted July 18, 2006 The National Institutes of Health's main campus in Bethesda, MD have pretty good exhibits that change all the time.I go there all the time (as it is located in the National Library of Medicine). The exhibits are meant as educational tools, but contain many historical pieces relating to the medical-science fields.
