coberst Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 Why Study History? Why study the struggles that humanity has engaged to arrive at this point in our journey? History provides various interpretations of the journey. History is a vital part of a liberal education, which provides depth and breadth of comprehension regarding what being human is about. History places the struggles into a comprehensible context. History helps us comprehend change and the dialectic of that change. We live in the ‘effect’ of a ‘cause’ and we will become the cause of the effect which is the future. History places this cause and effect series into a pattern that facilitates comprehension. History facilitates insight into human nature. “History is essential to the traditional objectives of the liberal arts, the quest for wisdom and virtue.” “There is another reason to study history: it's fun. History combines the excitement of exploration and discovery with the sense of reward born of successfully confronting and making sense of complex and challenging problems.”--Frank Luttmer (1996) http://history.hanover.edu/why.html Quote
Queso Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 What??? Well . .I think it's a REALLY good idea to study history so that you don't go around making the same silly mistakes people made in the past. Allows oneself to progress, getting a feel for probability, and outcomes. If you don't study history, you're going to have to learn life by yourself. And man, that would just take too damn long. Starting from 0, I watch man kind flourish in fast forwardand in this momenteverything almost makes sense. Quote
Queso Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 oh, wait, you knew that already. Now I'm lost. Quote
C1ay Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 History enables wisdom. The wise man learns from others’ mistakes, the fool learns from their own. Of course, the wise man must study the mistakes of others' past in order to learn from them, thus the benefit of history. Quote
Freddy Posted July 23, 2006 Report Posted July 23, 2006 I think my signature sums it up nicely! Quote
