cwes99_03 Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 Yah, I have support both Macs and PCs in my job. The hardware is changing just as fast with Macs as PCs and the OS is changing sometimes faster. The one thing that has been true of Macs (only because they lived largely off in their own world and didn't accept other peoples hardware) is that they were more stable because they had better driver development. However, anytime you added options to a mac (extra input cards), it was like pulling teeth getting it to work the first time. I haven't seen a boot camp mac and probably won't since my job now has me only working with PCs, but I used MACs for everything too, but definitely more often for the graphics and video editing that was built into them and not into the PCs that I had available at the time. learnin to learn Posted August 31, 2006 Report Posted August 31, 2006 I have a pc, but back when I worked on a printing press I had to use one of those old Mac's (they didnt get the new ones until I left:evil: ) But if it came down to a mac or a pc I would choose the one with the better price! Mercedes Benzene Posted September 1, 2006 Author Report Posted September 1, 2006 But if it came down to a mac or a pc I would choose the one with the better price! Well... Macs are infamous for their high prices. Quote
Tormod Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Well... Macs are infamous for their high prices. They're coming down fast now, though. The new MacBooks are quire reasonably priced, even if they are still above the average Dell. Also, the Mac desktops are using off-the-shelf hardware like standard graphics cards etc so it's not necessary to buy expensive Apple hardware to keep updated. Price is important. One thing about buying a Mac over a PC is that it is not a platform you want to use if you're into cracked software, simply because it's harder to find. However, with the excellent software that's already built into OSX you'd be hard pressed to need much, really. And there is a lot of shareware stuff available, too. I think the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is less on a PC than a Mac, but the difference is less than what most people tend to think! Quote
cwes99_03 Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Well, is that because they have gone over to the dark side (relatively speaking) in partnering with Intel? Quote
Tormod Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Well, is that because they have gone over to the dark side (relatively speaking) in partnering with Intel? Do you mean the price or hardware availability? I think both. Although for a few years now it's been possible to use graphics cards and standard harddrives etc with new Macs so not everything has had to be Apple certified. Quote
cwes99_03 Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Good point, and yes I meant that the lower price was tied to the availability of new parts not previously used in a Apple. Quote
TheFaithfulStone Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Actually, the new Mac Pros are cheaper than a comparable dell Workstation. I suspect not for long - but there you are. TFS Quote
Tormod Posted September 1, 2006 Report Posted September 1, 2006 Really? I guess they've finally seen the light, then. Quote
pinar Posted September 3, 2006 Report Posted September 3, 2006 I voted,"I have a PC(s), and I love them!" since I couln't find a better suiting option. My opinion on PCs and Macs is a bit more simple:"I use Pc because there aren't any Macs around!" But the real question here , (I mean in my country) is not loving or hating, we just don't use Macs since there aren't any Macs around. I haven't used any Macs so I don't know if they are good or not :) The prices of Macs are high and their maintenence costs are high and because of these reasons no one use them, and as you also know using something that nobody uses has some other disadvantages. Mercedes Benzene Posted September 3, 2006 Author Report Posted September 3, 2006 there aren't any Macs around. hmmm... that's strange. I wonder what the reason is for that. Apple is a large exporter... and I doubt that your country banned them for any reason. Peculiar. Quote

I'm sure there is no ban since you can see them in some big offices :) (something rare) But I don't know anyone who has a Mac at home ,and we don't have any in schools. The reason is price probably. Jay-qu Posted September 4, 2006 Report Posted September 4, 2006 I have never owned a mac, used them at school and other peoples houses, and I was indifferent to the interface, nothing special but at the same time didnt seem to be any worse off. Clearly if I spent more time I could find little things that would be better on one or the other. But thats not what its all about any more.. now that windows can be ran on macs and PCs dont have to be windows. Unfortunately I dont know much about mac hardware, just that it is more expensive! Quote
alexander Posted September 6, 2006 Report Posted September 6, 2006 Saying that macs are worse then PCs because of the pricing is the same as saying that Macs and Alpha boxes are better because MIT has made them into Aplha server and G5 kegorators... Quote
Jay-qu Posted September 6, 2006 Report Posted September 6, 2006 I have no idea what that means.. but I didnt mean macs are worse because of the price, only that I dont have much experience with them since my school went down the non-mac path because it was ultimately cheaper. Quote
