RAW Bits Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 Hi. I'm a nuclear physicist/chemist/computer programmer who is sensitive to the destruction of the philosophy of science. I joined this group to lobby for the elimination of phrases like "I believe" and "I don't think that...". They are fine for spiritual discussions but don't (IMHO) belong in any scientific discussion. Bush is partially responsible, with his disbelief in global warming and placing non-scientists on important panels and editing of reports. All scientists need to fight this trend wherever they can. Tormod Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 I joined this group to lobby for the elimination of phrases like "I believe" and "I don't think that...". I believe you're joking. I don't think that science should suffer from the censorship of common phrases. Good science is good science regardless. Quote
RAW Bits Posted August 21, 2006 Author Report Posted August 21, 2006 I am not arguing for the censorchip of common phrases, but merely the substitution of beliefs for good science, as our dear leader does. "I believe that the experiment is flawed" is not acceptible. "The experiment is flawed because the wrong statistic was used", e.g., is much better. Quote
Tormod Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 However, saying "The experiment is flawed because the wrong statistic was used" does not mean it was actually flawed. Quote
cwes99_03 Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 I agree, you are arguing for there to be no undetermined answers. If there were no undetermined answers then there would be no postulating or hypothesizing. What scientific world did you come from? Quote
cwes99_03 Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 I guess in actuallity what you are trying to say, is there should be more, "let's check to see if that is right", and less, "I don't think so, but I'm not going to do the research to back up my thoughts." If this is what you are asking for, I whole heartedly agree, but I don't think that is simply a facet of science, but of all life. If we have formed opinions on an issue, then they should be backed up by data. Quote
LJP07 Posted August 21, 2006 Report Posted August 21, 2006 Welcome to Hypography, I single-handedly made this site.... sorry Tormod! :) :) :) Quote
