Drawing Restraint 9 is an art film by American artist Matthew Barney, dealing with the relationship between creativity and self-imposed resistance. Shot in Nagasaki Bay, the film is set aboard the Japanese whaling ship Nisshin Maru. On board is a vast sculpture of vaseline entitled "The Field", which continually transforms during the film, most representing the theme of the work. The lead characters, known as "The Guests", are played by Matthew's partner, Björk and Matthew Barney himself. There is only one moment of dialogue within the 135-minute film - during the tea ceremony - which explains the history of the vessel Nisshin Maru.

Drawing Restraint 9 premiered at the 62nd Venice Film Festival and was screened at the Toronto International Film Festival in September 2005.

Independent Film Channel Films, has bought the U.S. theatrical rights to Drawing Restraint 9 and the film is now coming to over 18 cities in the U.S.

The trailer for the film can be seen at the "Drawing Restraint" - website

The soundtrack for the film was composed by Björk and was released on One Little Indian, Monday, July 25, 2005. It features the shō (Japanese mouth organ) playing of Mayumi Miyata.

No – thanks to your post, it’s on my must-see list, too. Even if I’d been able to resist the title and synopsis, I can’t resist anything with Björk in it, or even just in major chunks of its soundrack.

Another soon-to-be-released film I’m excited about is Darren Aronofsky’s “psychedelic fairy tale”, “The Fountain”. His 2 previous long films, “Pi” and “Requiem for a Dream” are among my – and, according to IMDB, quite a few other people’s - favorite movies. “Drawing Restraint 9” is pretty highly rated there, too, though it looks like even major metro area denizens like myself may have a hard time finding it in a theatre, or even in rental anytime soon :cup:

What would most excite me is for TOL to deliver on their promise on 2 sequel films to ”Tamala 2010”, the strangest film I’ve ever seen with any sort of sense to it.

thanks for the suggestions, Craig! im certainly check those titles out as well. i agree, the thing that lured me to even read the synopsis was the fact that Bjork was one of the guests. have you seen the Dancer in the Dark?

another film i am quite excited about is the long awaited "A Manual Dexterity", which is an upcoming and long-awaited film by Guitarist Omar A. Rodriguez-Lopez. that movie should be amazing, based on the soundtrack...

Yes, and much enjoyed it. From time-to-time I even cover “the number song” from near its end, Though my voice isn’t vaguely similar to Björk’s :cup:

I've seen this movie . .

I was glued. I just kept thinking "Ritual"

The whole movie consisted of strange rituals, and perspectives . .

I don't know the point, but it was a good abstract film.

It was strange how boring it was . . I seem to like it for how boring it was, and it's intense abstractions.

As a whole, the movie actually taught me a lesson.

After watching it, I was a bit more precise with my movement. A bit more nimble, yet

relaxed

and graceful-

Rather than,

GO !

GO RUSH

GO GO RUSH

RUSH GO RUSH GO
