I personally think objectivity is being missed in favour of subjectivity. What do I mean by this? Simply that it isn't a question of religion really but attitude. Two men can grow up in the same slum - one will go on to become a policeman, the other a criminal (terrorist in this case). The question is do you really believe in anything and you willing to work to create something for yourself and future generations or are you out for self glorification and an easy way out of life? There are ordinary Moslems just getting on with their lives as there are Jews, Christians, Sikhs etc. Criminals hide behind the law - the just stand in front of it and proclaim and work for it proudly. Terrorism or crime, narcissism or paranoia - the end result is the same, blaming others for your own failures instead of putting in the effort to change (rather than destroy) what you don't like - and in the case of criminals, it can be themselves as low self-esteem is usually in the picture (loathing of others because they loathe themselves (not love) at base).

Sometimes these are one in the same.

It comes from an antisocial response to a perceived sense of injustice and is generally fostered by those, in many ways like a religious leader or even through one, who are seeking to manipulate people for their own purpose and agenda.
