Here is an interesting intellectual experiment. Start with a group of small children and divide them equally into two. One group will be allowed to set their own environment for development and the other group will be have their environment set for them.

In many respects, you'll end up with a situation of one group having dogma imposed on them, and the other side inventing its own dogma. But it illustrates the concept of selection very well. Although, I have to say, that in my experience, division of little children into two equal parts normally results in them bleeding to death.
