embibble Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 I have a few questions about melatonin, hopefully someone will be able to help me out. I am researching melatonin because of it possible benefit to domesticated animals who have health problems due to the messed up photo periods (extended with artificial light). First question is about dosage. Found a bottle of liquid melatonin at the vitamin shoppe. (sorry it won't let me post the link) I am having trouble reading the Supplement facts section. Says that there is 1 mg of melatonin per serving. Then it says the serving size is 4 ... (I think ml)Then it says there are 2 'liquid' servings per container. but there are nearly 30 ml per oz, and nearly 30,000 mg per oz right?. Below that it says to take 4 droppers (4ml), so that must mean that the serving is 4 ml. And then there must be .25 melatonin in every ml of water? Also does anyone know approximately how long melatonin lasts in the body? Or how to determine how long the effect would last? If you have any further information about melatonin please let me know! Thanks! Quote
Mercedes Benzene Posted September 12, 2006 Report Posted September 12, 2006 Also does anyone know approximately how long melatonin lasts in the body? Or how to determine how long the effect would last? If you have any further information about melatonin please let me know! Melatnoin should last no more than about 4 hours in the body. Being a hormone, it acts as a messenger and is then excreted. Afterall, there is no reason for it to stay in the body!:) Also, I'm having trouble analyzing the data you provided for serving size, but I'm still trying to get some melatonin out of my system myself. :hihi: I'll try again when I'm a little more *awake*. embibble Posted September 12, 2006 Author Report Posted September 12, 2006 About 4 hours for a human body right? So, lets say, in a ferrets body would the duration be longer or shorter? I would think shorter, but I'm not sure. Quote

I would think shorter, but I'm not sure. I would GUESS (let me put emphasis on guess), that it would be about the same. Since the melatonin is acting in the same way, I see no reason that its effective "duration" would not also be the same. :hihi: Calling on ferret biochemists!! Ferret biochemists?? Quote
