Ganoderma Posted October 10, 2006 Report Posted October 10, 2006 not really but there are many more specific ones such as Plants of "XX" country, or orchids of USA etc. here are a couple links. Reptiles: http://www.embl-heidelberg.de/%7Euetz/LivingReptiles.htmlFish: http://www.fishbase.org/search.phpNative plants of taiwan (the site sucks but the info is around offline): http://taiwanflora.sinica.edu.tw/english/eindex.htmlamphibians: http://research.amnh.org/herpetology/amphibia/index.phpa new amphibian i havnt used before: http://amphibiaweb.org/search/index.htmlGymnosperm (i havnt had great luck with this site): http://www.conifers.org/ there are also more general but helpful sites like : http://bugguide.net/node/view/15740 http://animaldiversity.ummz.umich.edu/site/index.htmlbut they are not very specific especially a tthe genera and specie levels. I know of no site that offers such a complete database that would be that user friendly. I have in the past found good sites that offer pieces of information more specific to the area the website is covering. Heres a good site: http://www.npwrc.usgs.gov/sitemap.htm This one covers plants for aquarium use, and its database offers good information on the plants origins: http://www.tropica.dk/default.asp The nice thing about the plant database is it gives family name and origin which would allow you to google that to find more information about that family and possibly build your own database of information. Michaelangelica Posted March 21, 2009 Report Posted March 21, 2009 ;)In these, Internet WWW days, you would think that such lists would be available on line ? + being added to daily. What's Wiki doing if not thisIs it just too big a job? Quote
Ganoderma Posted March 25, 2009 Report Posted March 25, 2009 have you ever looked at plant taxonomy? its a mess! most of the time there are a few different classifications of the same plant.....that and there are tens of thousands of species....not even going into the fact that the basic outlaying for a species is more directed at animals and plants really don't see to work as well in the same classification system! add that to the numbers involved with all species, and also the fact that some countries are so rugged, unaccessible, not safe to go to or simply just no money/interest in exploring, and there we have our results. but you can get fairly good results searching for specific families, or orders in certain countries. like spiders of canada, orchids of taiwan, carps of japan etc....you can get good lists if you do this individually, especially for "developed" countries.
