Boerseun Posted November 8, 2006 Author Report Posted November 8, 2006 London, easy. New York, easy. Berlin, come on... Place names are normally short and sharp and easily pronouncable. Mostly 'cause we grew up with them, and know how it works. But then you get to off-beat places with funny names like Krzykystan etc., and you're stumped. As an example, here's one: The capital of Madagascar, ANTANANARIVO. The pronounciation of Madagascan names look impossible to us at first glance. Way too many 'nanana's, but are actually very easy, once you know the trick! So, rep to the first guy/gal who can tell me how Antananarivo is pronounced! The clock is a'tickin', ladies and germs! Buffy Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 Oh one of my favorite places to visit (I bet Turtle's been there!): Gualala, CA... Doesn't look like much but try to say it three times really fast.... In the Banana Belt,Mendo Buffy Quote
Boerseun Posted November 8, 2006 Author Report Posted November 8, 2006 Three times? Here goes: Gualalagualalagualala That's the sound my toilet makes when the drain is blocked! Quote
Jay-qu Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 well here goes: Antan (like in lantern without the 'l') ana-rivo  Quote
Turtle Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 So, rep to the first guy/gal who can tell me how Antananarivo is pronounced! The clock is a'tickin', ladies and germs! I can't find the phoenetic characters so here's a rough go. The A is long A, the nt is pronounced as L, the anana is pronounce imp, short I, and rivo is pronounced veeny or weeny. A - lim - pweeny  Quote

Tormod Posted November 8, 2006 Report Posted November 8, 2006 As an example, here's one: The capital of Madagascar, ANTANANARIVO. antana-narivo. Or maybe they just call it "An". :phones: Boerseun 1 Quote
Boerseun Posted November 9, 2006 Author Report Posted November 9, 2006 Rep to the guy who's rep count stays at fifty! Yep, Madagascan names are a concatenation of words, and Antananarivo is actually two distinct words - Antana and Narivo. If you keep that in mind, it's quite easy to pronounce! The proper pronounciation is Antana Narivo. As in two words. Easy! But mostly, the locals simply refer to it as "Tana" :phones: Quote
Tormod Posted November 9, 2006 Report Posted November 9, 2006 Rep to the guy who's rep count stays at fifty! Nono, the rep goes up...it's jut the power that stays at 50. :) But mostly, the locals simply refer to it as "Tana" :) But of course. :hihi: So try this one for size: Guovvdageainnu It's a city in Northern Norway, and the spelling is Sami.
