It seems YouTube becomes the latest battlefront for phishing deepfakes, read more at YouTube Becomes Latest Battlefront for Phishing, Deepfakes (darkreading.com) and Video: ‘This is so creepy’: Youtuber says someone cloned her image for deepfake video in China | CNN

Do you think that deepfakes should be banned from YouTube?

It really depends, deep fakes are being used to produce some impressive satire but if the deep fake is actually being used to portray someone with out it being known to be a fake then yes its wrong an needs to be stopped. Being deep faked and the fake being passed off as real simply has to be stopped.

Australia at the present time is considering the idea of passing a law banning children under the age of 14 from participating in all social media. Some states will apparently be going it alone if the Federal government are slow to act. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-05-24/social-media-ban-children-under-16-government/103885784  On the question at hand, my answer is yes.

No qualifiers?

As you say, such things as obvious satire, election propaganda perhaps, and obvious humour. But the stuff promoting damn out right lies, harmful inuendo, shaming others, hateful speech, excessive promotion of crazy conspiracy theories, and phishing in general are detrimental to society. The shaming of others and hateful speech have been recognised as the cause of young suicides in Australia and the reason for the consideration of bans for young ones and sub teens.

I thought we were just discussing deep fakes, all the stuff you name is not specifically part of deep fakes.

In actual fact, I had never heard of the terminology "deep fakes" and had to google. First thing that came to mind was a former President of yours. Doesn't phishing and this deep fakes crap apply to all social media? Isn't this why reputable social media like science forums for example, have  moderators to weed out the nonsense.

Yes but deep fakes is quite new, the problems of phishing and other criminal acts on the net are independent of deep fakes. I understand what you are saying I just don't see how its a problem of deep fakes or how banning deep fakes would stop is since this existed before deep fakes.

OK, understood. My point was that much evil exists on social media, even though not necessarily criminal behaviour. I suppose in many respects its the age we live in, an age I don't fully adhere to, or agree with. Then again, my time was far from perfect also.

Striking out against evil is always a good thing but we have to make sure collateral damage isn't worse than the actual evil. Deep fakes are just a tool, a tool that can be abused and is being abused but the abuse is not caused by deep fakes. I am a bit of a take responsibility for your own actions type of person, I don't hold to sweeping authoritarian type actions. I would prefer more targeted actions. I hate to say it but I don't see a way to control this other than age restrictions and we all know that our youthful compatriots will always be able to bypass our "adult" restrictions as we did when we were young.
