Do you wear a hat or hats? Why? Where? When? What kind?

I have many and my current favorite is an old felt fedora. It keeps the sun & rain off, keeps me warm, and has a bit of style that reflects my character.

I've got a bit of an odd-shaped head, too big for hats. This is not to say there's a lot of brains in the skull, I think it simply points to a rather thick piece of bone between the hair and the gray matter.

When I was in the cadets, I was the only one of five hundred guys who didn't have to wear a beret; they simply didn't have my size in inventory.

Nonetheless, after years of hat-hunting, I found one that fits in Australia, back in '99. One of those wide-brimmed Stetson-lookalikes (without the wine corks). And that's not only my favourite hat, it's the only one that fits!

When my hair was growing out through college, and it was at that in-between stage where it wasn't short enough to look good, and wasn't long enough to do anything with like pull it back, I'd wear a backward baseball cap. Everybody knew me because of that hat. It said,

"Give blood, play hockey."

Now, with my hair pulled in a pony-tail, I look a bit effeminate in hats so don't tend to wear them much anymore... :D

I love hats.

Be it a beret, some sort of russian warmth, a beanie, some jazzy top hat

or a wizards cap

you could usually always find me hooded with something.

I find a lot of comfort being shaded by warmth.

Repels the eyes behind me. vibes.

I gathered up a few of the hats I wear with some regularity & photographed the collection. The fedora I mentioned is top left. Can you pick out the 2 I made myself?

While we judge how well we think we look in hats, there is also the issue of how others think we look. And what about hats we're forced to wear for work or other social affiliations? :phones: Top that!

Baseball style caps only (although, most of them are car related like "Danica" or "Infineon Raceway"), and they have to have that sizing thingy in the back so we can put our ponytails through it. The kid and I look like the Bobbsy Twins sometimes...

Oh well the safety dance, :phones:

My new avatar should answer the question quite nicely...................Infy

Such a handsome man deserves a fedora. ;) Don't you remember when we all wore them back in the 30's & 40's? Not only are they jazzin, they're practical. The biggest drawback of a fedora is keeping it on your head in a wind. :hihi: This is why I bought the Aussie style bush hat with a chin strap. (I never figured out the usefullness of one side snapping up though . )

do kercheifs count?

I took a quick poll in da house, as I I was unsure if a kerchief was a hat or not. Results are in: no, a kerchief is not a hat. Your choice of headgear however is duly noted. ;)

Addendum: What you refer to as a kerchief, many here call a bandana. I have and wear some 15 different bandanas.

Hmmm... I don't generally wear hats. When I do, they're baseball caps.

My favorite says "Ireland" on it. It's and American Eagle hat.

Ironic?

Maybe not too ironic given the distinguished contributions to the US by Irish immigrants. Viva la grün!

Well nows...seems we have to discuss the issue of hat size. :)

As to the ball-cap style with the sizing thingys, I have just one. In general I don't like them because they inevitably pucker up and look stupid and ill fitting which reflects negatively on the wearer. While I wear short hair at present, I too have found the utility of putting my pony tail through the hole; this not only keeps an unsightly hair bulge out of the hat, it keeps the hat in place. I wear mine these days only during vigorous yard work.

As to size in general, mens' hat sizes are determined differently than womens'. A woman's hat size is simply the circumference of their heads in inches, wheras a man's hat size is the diameter of the theoretical perfect circle circumference of their heads to the nearest 1/8".

Regardless of the lumpy bulbosity of Boerseun's caranium, a properly sized hat can be shaped to it. I am on the other end of the spectrum, being myself possessed of a pinhead. For us, the only solution is a well stocked milliner rather than a Quick-Mart counter.

I note with a bit of sadness that it has gone out of fashion to tip one's hat as a sign of respect. I do it anyway to mess with peoples' heads.;)
