Turtle Posted December 21, 2006 Report Posted December 21, 2006 I heard a report on the news yesterday claiming that vegan's are 'smarter' than omnivorous people. So, vote the poll and/or post you feelings about this claim or vegan vs. meat-eater in general. Where's the beef‽ :) Quote
Racoon Posted December 21, 2006 Report Posted December 21, 2006 This is what conflicts me with Buddhism. strict Buddhists are completely Vegan, and thats a perfectly acceptable and healthy lifestyle.. Inasmuch as you are very conscious of making plate combinations that form a complete protein. (i.e. beans and rice) Also, there could be a bit more disection between the classification of vegans? is Octo-Lavo vegetarianism a consideration? I believe Man succeeded by being a hunter-gatherer, or as farmer and fisherman. Therefor I believe the optimal thing to do is have some meat and fish as well... in proportionate moderation. (not always a successful endevor ) I have noticed this type of discussion being a bit more concerned about psychological issues more than actual physiological and nutritional issues... and I deal with a lot of this kind of debate... :) Quote
Jay-qu Posted December 21, 2006 Report Posted December 21, 2006 Where is the carnivore option? "you dont make friends with salad" :) I love both my meat and other foods, to make the best meals you need both in combination I dont think humans have evolved to be vegetarians, we have always had meat as part of our balanced diet, but if you can get all the same nutrients from vegies than that only leaves these psychological issues rac is talking about... Turtle Posted December 21, 2006 Author Report Posted December 21, 2006 Where is the carnivore option? "you dont make friends with salad" :) I did consider making that an option on the poll, but I decided no one eats only meat to the exclusion of veggies so I went with the omnivore tag. If we find that's not the case then we'll have to rely on a post in the thread. Quote
Buffy Posted December 21, 2006 Report Posted December 21, 2006 You're still missing an option though Mr. T: "No, I eat dairy".... Strictly speaking,Buffy Quote
Turtle Posted December 21, 2006 Author Report Posted December 21, 2006 Also, there could be a bit more disection between the classification of vegans? is Octo-Lavo vegetarianism a consideration? Never heard of that? I thought I'd heard of variations but couldnm't remember them. Is that the fruit-only version? I have noticed this type of discussion being a bit more concerned about psychological issues more than actual physiological and nutritional issues... and I deal with a lot of this kind of debate... I agree. Part 'moral' objection, part 'disgust' factor. Seems to me if we're to eat, something has to die. :hihi: Quote
Turtle Posted December 21, 2006 Author Report Posted December 21, 2006 You're still missing an option though Mr. T: "No, I eat dairy".... Strictly speaking,Buffy Acknowledged. Moo moo, buckeroo. PS My apologies to the goats, yaks, camels, and any and all milk producing mammals for my bovine-centric bias. :hihi: Quote
maikeru Posted December 22, 2006 Report Posted December 22, 2006 I'm not a vegan. I like my steaks. I think it's clear from human history that we've been omnivores, although I don't have a problem if people become vegetarians, vegans, or what not because of philosophical, religious, or medical reasons. InfiniteNow Posted December 22, 2006 Report Posted December 22, 2006 I heard a report on the news yesterday claiming that vegan's are 'smarter' than omnivorous people.Beware the spurious relationship my friend, as correlation makes not causation. While I limit my intake, I do eat my delicious friends. They'd surely do the same for me if given the option/evolutionary machinery to do so. Quote

So, vote the poll and/or post you feelings about this claim or vegan vs. meat-eater in general. Where's the beef‽ I seem to remember viewing a National Geographic Special in which it was pointed out that the evolution of the human brain was sped-up thru the consumtion of meat products. It seems that the B vitamins contained within meat are neccessary for the optimum developement of brain tissues and are responsible for the accelerated evolution also. I'll take mine medium rare if you please........................Infy Quote
Turtle Posted December 22, 2006 Author Report Posted December 22, 2006 Here's an article about the study I mentioned in the opening post: Vegetarians are more intelligent, says study | News | This is London Quote
Tormod Posted December 22, 2006 Report Posted December 22, 2006 I'll happily support any notion that vegans are more intelligent, if it means more beef for the rest of us. Quote
Chacmool Posted December 22, 2006 Report Posted December 22, 2006 I'm a vegetarian. I haven't eaten chicken in 20 years, I haven't eaten meat in 12 years, and I recently stopped eating fish too. I also avoid everything containing gelatine. I still consume milk and eggs, otherwise I'd have to give up cake and chocolate. I try not to buy leather products. Also, I will NEVER own a fur coat. Boerseun Posted December 22, 2006 Report Posted December 22, 2006 Omnivore, over here. I'm of the opinion that we didn't evolve canine teeth to pull down a roving carrot. No, seriously - we have incisors to cut in general, be it meat or vegetable matter, but we have canines for meat, and molars to pulp fibrous vegetable matter. We're good all-rounders, and I believe that because of that, we should have an all-round balanced diet of both vegetables and meat. But you shouldn't be dining on encephalopathic bovines. Quote
LJP07 Posted December 22, 2006 Report Posted December 22, 2006 I'll happily support any notion that vegans are more intelligent, if it means more beef for the rest of us. I found a sub-article about the writer and he says " We have to make Vegans feel more comfortable with themselves. They have made a silly decision to give up meat and are gullible enough to believe they're more intelligent than us meat eaters. Maybe I should re-write the article, it's not fair on them! ". Sorry vegans Quote
Jay-qu Posted December 22, 2006 Report Posted December 22, 2006 I also avoid everything containing gelatine. You know Im pretty sure you can get gelatine substitute made from seaweed Quote
C1ay Posted December 23, 2006 Report Posted December 23, 2006 If one eats beef and beef eats grass, does that make one a vegan?:hihi: Quote
