Boerseun Posted December 22, 2006 Report Posted December 22, 2006 So let's say Hillary won in 2008. What'll Bill become? The First Husband, or the First Gentleman? Has this ever been considered, seeing as the US never had a female president? What was Maggie Thatcher's hubby referred to as? If it's the First Husband, then Hillary must have been the First Wife - which she wasn't. So the male of the First Lady must then be the First Gentleman? I suppose so, but it's extremely clunky... Tormod Posted December 22, 2006 Report Posted December 22, 2006 I don't think he'll be anything, really. Or maybe First Spouse. But he is of course still President in title since that is a title for life. So it could be the first time in history that there would be two presidents living in the White House. Quote
eric l Posted December 22, 2006 Report Posted December 22, 2006 Why not, by analogy with "prince consort" (for husband of the queen regnant) : "gentleman consort" or even "first consort" ? Quote

InfiniteNow Posted December 24, 2006 Report Posted December 24, 2006 So let's say Hillary won in 2008. What'll Bill become? He'll still be Mr. President, as all previous presidents retain the title. President Jimmy Carter is still described as Mr. President. However, if it were another woman whose husband is not a former president, my vote would be "First Man," or something entirely different like "First Spouse." :( Quote
