Annoying Twit Posted January 7, 2007 Report Posted January 7, 2007 Hello all. I'm new to these forums so may not have worked out what to post or not to post. So my question here may well justify my choice of moniker. Is there a small book that non-geologists could use to identify rocks. The application would be when my family (including a 7 year old) are out in various natural environments, and see rocks. It would, I believe, make these trips more interesting if we could identify the rocks, and know something about them. Are there any books people would recommend. Something where you could pick up a rock, and perhaps follow some list of steps to quickly identify the rock, or rock formation? I'm in the UK, in the East Midlands, as that is likely to make a difference. Quote

I have and use a guide from the Audubon Society titled The Audubon Society Field Guide to North American Rocks and Minerals, but on searching before posting I don't find a version for the UK. Nonetheless, it may suffice as it is an excellent general guide with photos, descriptions, explanations, and is a soft-cover field guide format. Runs about $20 US. Here's a link to the Amazon UK site:Amazon.co.uk: Field Guide to Rocks and Minerals (Peterson Field Guides): Books: Frederick H.
