Hello from Puget Sound

Hello. I’ve entered this forum as “Larv,” as in “larva,” since I never really made it to the butterfly stage. I’m a retired biologist, basically, with a PhD in civil engineering. That happened because the University of Washington’s CE department had (still has) a very good program for training limnologists to manage freshwater resources, namely concerning matters of eutrophication and lake restoration. But my career didn’t go that way. Instead I worked on many Department-of-Energy projects involving the hazards and disposal of nuclear wastes. I was skeptical at first, going into that field, because I was predisposed to be against nuclear energy; coming away from it 30 years later I am not so skeptical about it. As such, our energy crisis is of great interest to me. However, my other main interest these days is evolutionary biology, which of course entails nearly all of the sciences. Origin of life is my favorite dilemma. Aside from that, I am a Puget Sound sailor. At my age of 67 the Internet and forums like this one have appeal to me. I’ll see if I have anything important to contribute.

could fit into a lot of the global warming threads including DIY planet cooling Recently there was a little chat about river eutrophication in the Terra preta thread.

There are many nuclear waste issues and mentions here (use the search tool "ticking" the posts option).

 

How the nuclear energy industry deals/will deal with waste is my main concern with nuclear power plants.

You might like to put in some input re their cost vis-a-vis renewables in the many threads that talk about this.

Racoon asked if my nuclear-waste work was associated with Hanford. It was, partly. Eventually, as a consultant, I was also involved with DOE's nation-wide search for a second HLW repository. That occurred during the mid-to-late years of my nuclear career. But that program went south just after Chernobyl when Energy secretary Harrington cancelled it and initiated a retreat from nuclear energy. Too bad. And then there was the SSC debacle... Personally, I think we could use a few more nukes and a first-rate collider right now. (And, yes, the San Juans are nice—there are so many great sailing places here in the NW. I happen to live on Oyster Bay in Bremerton, with my sailboat Pearl moored out front.)
