wine Posted January 14, 2007 Report Posted January 14, 2007 All my life I've been able to identify tones with Letters. Oh yes that's an A . .But, how do you calculate the note by frequency? For instance, I know that 220Hz is A, and so is 110Hz, 440Hz. Is 12Hz a half-step? I've always been very confused and ignorant, and I want to figure this out. Who here on the forums is musically talented? I'd like a word with ya. Quote
CraigD Posted January 15, 2007 Report Posted January 15, 2007 But, how do you calculate the note by frequency? For “even tempering”, the frequency of each note in the scale is that of the note before it on the 12 note chromatic scale (eg: C C# D D# E F F# G G# A A# B) multiplied by [math]2^{\frac1{12}}[/math], or about 1.059463094359293528. So of C is 440 hz, C# is about 466.16 hz, D 493.88, etc. Not all 12 note scales use even tempering, but it takes a better ear than mine to tell. Quote
