DarkColoredLight Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 I'm wondering if I could get some feedback on a little on going creative project of mine. For starters I use a program called Reason 3.0 to create nice little hip hopish beats for me and my freinds to listen to. I do have some aspirations of making it big but for now I just like wrapping my mind around the program and expressing my self through dancable/listenable songs. I guess I'm getting a bit better at the whole concept of compossing just through trial and error. But, I'm kind of excited to here what some others make of my music. So without further adieu here is the audio. If you could, just listen to a couple tracks. Tell me what one's you liked, what time frame of what songs you like. What songs you didn't like, what time frame of what songs you didn't like. What aspects of what songs you liked. Just whatever comes to mind really. Thanks in advance,DCL Quote
wine Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 You definitely need to take your beats to the next level using the Reason Mastering suite. Beef up the bass, add some compression to that snare, AND LOTS of compression on the bass track, as well. The lead is very modern hip-hop,and I liked your use of delay, but seriously-The beats have rhythm, they just lack the POWER.Don't make them too ridiculous, though, just a step or two up, if you know what I mean.Equalizers Are Good.Keep experimenting! DarkColoredLight Posted January 18, 2007 Author Report Posted January 18, 2007 snipeKeep experimenting! I've been messing around with the spider audio merger/splitter. Going from the redrum to an eq then to the mixer. I'm wondering if that's such a good idea. Thanks for the input though. Favorite song so far? Quote
wine Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 Won't have a favorite 'til those beats are BANGIN! Quote
DarkColoredLight Posted January 18, 2007 Author Report Posted January 18, 2007 Ahaha. Fair enough. I'll have to see if my producer freind won't make some time to help me out a bit and show me the ropes. But for now, I'll keep doing what I do best. Which is composing. Just know your voice is being heard. Quote
wine Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 Reason is awesome, and I can see and hear that you have the ability to compose beats. Just run the beast thru the mastering suite and some equalization and compression and that should be enough to beef it up. Do you know what I mean by Mastering Suite? It's a function within Reason. Like Redrum, or Malstrom. What kind of monitors are you using?Headphones, external speakers? If you don't have good monitors, invest in some good DJ headphones or something. You probably already know this, but, more information to transcend into the internet. anglepose Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 Ok i realy dont like hip hop but it sounds good for hip hop just a bit slow lacking some words, heres a little trick.get a 16 note bass synth riff play it slow and make sure you liike it then turn it up to 320 bmp and you have a seriusly danceable background. Quote
wine Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 That would be absolutely absurd, and maybe would only work in the middle of a compositionwith extremely drastic change and methods to induce this change. It'd be fun for a few bars, then just sound sophomoric. Another suggestion would be very subtle, polyrhythms in the background.Ones that will complement your lead synths, very quiet, yet very different from the other tracks. Pan these accordingly. You also might want to try subliminal things. Even quieter. So quiet you can't hear them, but your brain does. It's insane. Possible. Complex. Fun. Quote
anglepose Posted January 18, 2007 Report Posted January 18, 2007 well considering it came from howard goodall one of the best composers in the world.... Quote

Mastering Suite: MClass Mastering Suite Combi - MClass Maximizer I'm farmilliar, but far from a master at mastering. Monitor; idk, compaq?Running the sound to my bose digital audio 5.1 surround sound.I do want to get some headphones for late night/early morning mixing. I'm just getting my feet wet with sound design and engineering. So though I didn't predict someone to comment on the quality, it doesn't surprise me that someone did. This is because I've heard other producers tell me I need to fix all the levels and what not. All in all, I have made progress in making my beats not so harsh on the ears, but in the back of my mind I know they are far from ear candy. get a 16 note bass synth riff play it slow and make sure you liike it then turn it up to 320 bmp and you have a seriusly danceable background. I think timberland did this with a couple of his beats. Hrm, I'll see what I can do with this concept. Quote
DarkColoredLight Posted January 23, 2007 Author Report Posted January 23, 2007 Keep us posted Did you take a look at the new one called 1 20? I focused a bit more on sound design and mastering with this one. But, it's still a little akward right now. More or less it's trial and error untill I get a better understanding of it all. I might tinker with it a little more tonight and update it without the vocals. IDK we'll see. Quote
DarkColoredLight Posted February 10, 2007 Author Report Posted February 10, 2007 2 10 07 Lo2 10 07 Hi I didn't really mess with the sound design and/or mixing (outside of reason) for this one. But I think what I lack in engineering get's picked up by the composing aspect of the song. What'd do you guys think? Quote
InfiniteNow Posted February 10, 2007 Report Posted February 10, 2007 What'd do you guys think? It's like an inner city south american lambada... Needs more angst though considering the baseline you've chosen... By a minute in, it's still too soft. Everyone's a critic, eh? Much better than anything I could have put together... thanks. :singer: Quote

freeztar Posted July 24, 2007 Report Posted July 24, 2007 Hey there, I'm also a music producer (I use Tracktion), so hopefully I can give you some good advice here.I just listened to your latest track. It needs a melody first of all. The way I usually approach a melody is to hum or sing along with the track until you find something that works with the backing tracks. Then I pick out the notes on my keyboard and either play them in or mouse the notes into the pianoroll. As Wine pointed out earlier, you could use some compression on the drums. Actually, I would choose some drums with more beef to them and then compress those. For this genre, I would try a compression of 6:1 with an attack of 250ms and a release somewhere around 600ms, but of course you will have to experiment to find the ideal setting for your track and tastes.I didn't hear a bass line in this song, but that could be because I'm listening through cheap earbuds at work. Is that low synth line in the background supposed to be the bass? If so, drop it down an octave and bring the volume way up. Hope some of that helps. Cheers. B) Quote
